New: Montana Libertarian candidate for Senate endorses GOP rival Matt Rosendale
October 31, 2018
The race for U.S. Senate in Montana has taken a last-minute twist with an endorsement for Republican candidate Matt Rosendale from one of his rivals.
Libertarian candidate Rick Breckenridge suddenly announced Wednesday that he cannot win the election and endorsed Rosendale over Democrat incumbent Jon Tester.
The race in Montana is close, but Sen. Jon Tester, D-Mont., has consistently lead Rosendale. The most recent Gravis poll taken last week shows Tester with a three-point lead over Rosendale, a statistical tie within the margin of error.
Rosendale is running as a conservative, with backing from conservative lawmakers including Sens. Rand Paul, R-Ky., Ted Cruz, R-Texas, and Mike Lee, R-Utah, and organizations including the Club for Growth and the Senate Conservatives Fund. He has said he would like to decrease the size of the federal government by eliminating the Departments of Energy and Education, and the Environmental Protection Agency.
Tester is running as a moderate Democrat, stressing Montana values like a love of hunting and pride in gun ownership. He's run into trouble, though, as Rosendale has attacked Tester for claiming to love hunting without possessing a hunting license for six years.
