The gun control narrative is already beginning to take over following the shooting of Rep. Steve Scalise, R-La., and several others at a Congressional Baseball Game practice in Alexandria, Va. Wednesday morning.
In a pair of tweets, David Frum, a senior editor at The Atlantic, shared the following amid the bloodshed:
In view of reports of many, many shots, also worth noting— David Frum (@davidfrum) June 14, 2017
No restrictions on large-capacity magazines https://t.co/YLG1mRGnMO
Virginia:— David Frum (@davidfrum) June 14, 2017
No background checks
No permit req’d for concealed carry of long guns
Open carry long guns & handguns
That is filled with misinformation about the Old Dominion State’s gun laws. Here’s the truth.
The state does indeed require background checks for firearms sales through licensed vendors, though private sales are exempt.
Virginia has specific restrictions pertaining to magazines in more populated areas like Alexandria, where the shooting took place. Magazines that carry over 20 rounds of ammunition for semi-automatic weapons, or over seven shotgun shells, are restricted.
Concealed carry of long guns is illegal (not to mention impractical in almost all cases, due to the physical nature of a long gun). While open carry of long guns is legal, the practice is subject to the magazine restrictions above.
Therefore, had the shooter been using a magazine that held over 20 rounds, carrying it in any form would have been illegal at a public park in Alexandria.
Responding to Frum, some called out the inaccuracy, while others chided the media figure for politicizing the tragedy so soon after its occurrence.
Dude. Not now.— Charles Repine (@DistrictDawg) June 14, 2017
There are background checks in Virginia, and you don’t don’t “concealed carry” long guns. Why do you never do any research?— Charles C. W. Cooke (@charlescwcooke) June 14, 2017
David, there ARE background checks in Virginia. I had one.— Ben Domenech (@bdomenech) June 14, 2017
You are an idiot-background checks are required and I'm certain we will find out that the shooter is a liberal Democrat from another state— Tony Shaffer (@T_S_P_O_O_K_Y) June 14, 2017
And Frum responded to some of criticism on his timeline:
And the conversation continues ...
Keep going. All of those things were false in one way or another. https://t.co/YtBHNF8Uoa— Stephen Gutowski (@StephenGutowski) June 14, 2017
