Eleanor Clift has been on television and writing in the media since before I was in high school, which is a feat, considering I’m in my mid-40s. Maybe that’s why she hasn’t figured out this thing called Google and blithely tweets out blatant falsehoods to push a narrative. This time, it’s about Karen Handel and Planned Parenthood.
Here’s what Clift tweeted.
Will Karen Handel vote to defund Planned Parenthood, where she was top exec and supported PP goals before getting booted out.— Eleanor Clift (@EleanorClift) June 21, 2017
All of that is more than blatantly false. It’s completely made-up and without any basis whatsoever in reality.
Karen Handel was never employed by Planned Parenthood. In fact, she was employed by the Susan G. Komen Fund for the Cure and was instrumental in removing that organization’s funding of Planned Parenthood. Here’s how the Dallas News reported on it.
Karen Handel, the Republican trying to win a Georgia congressional seat Tuesday in the most expensive House race in U.S. history, has been haunted throughout the election by her past with Dallas' Susan G. Komen for the Cure foundation.
Five years ago, Handel was at the center of a Komen controversy when the cancer prevention foundation briefly halted its donations to Planned Parenthood for breast exams — a decision that would saddle the high-profile nonprofit with a public relations nightmare.
The controversy led to Handel stepping down while boosting her anti-abortion credentials, but cost Komen millions in donations and a lasting tarnish on its brand.
That story was found by typing the words, “Karen Handel” and “Planned Parenthood” into Google. It took less than 15 seconds to fact-check.
After this writer brought the egregious error to her attention – in a series of tweets – Clift admitted her error, three hours after the original post. Here’s her awkward “apology,” which does nothing to excuse her original tweet.
my error, Handel worked for Susan G. Komen (not PP) and got pushed out over defunding Planned Parenthood. Now can vote to defund— Eleanor Clift (@EleanorClift) June 21, 2017
It is members of the mainstream media like Eleanor Clift who push an agenda instead of facts, who are poster children for why the nation distrusts the media.
