In the final days of the Republican primary for U.S. Senate in Alabama, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has been cast as the king of the D.C. swamp by conservative candidates Rep. Mo Brooks and Judge Roy Moore.

Brooks, in particular, has made replacing McConnell as majority leader a core plank of his campaign. As the primary comes to a close on Aug 15, the Brooks campaign is touring the state in a campaign bus decorated with a “Ditch Mitch!” banner.

Not to be outdone, Judge Moore is campaigning hard against “Mitch McConnell’s DC slime machine,” going after the millions of dollars McConnell’s super PAC allies have dumped into the race to support incumbent appointed Senator Luther Strange, R-Ala.

In contrast, Senator Strange claims he wants to drain the swamp, and he has the endorsement of President Trump, yet there is nary a word of criticism from Strange for McConnell’s leadership.

If Strange was serious about changing the culture of Washington D.C., he would acknowledge McConnell’s leadership failures, but he’s not serious. He’s not going to change things.

That’s why McConnell is going to the mat to keep him in the U.S. Senate.
