President Trump should add the Islamic caliphate-seeking Muslim Brotherhood to the U.S. list for foreign terrorist organizations, following his decision this week to designate North Korea as a state sponsor of terrorism.
Trump announced North Korea’s addition to the list of state sponsors of terrorism Monday, accusing the Pyongyang regime of carrying out assassinations on foreign soil. Additionally, the designation came with a new round of sanctions targeting the country.
While North Korea under Kim Jong Un is certainly a full-fledged Stalinist regime, its terror-financing activities is relatively contained to the few countries (such as China and Iran) and groups that it trades with.
However, the same cannot be said about the Muslim Brotherhood, which has become a global menace in the 21st century, constantly threatening the integrity of U.S.-allied nations and the stability of American interests worldwide.
The Muslim Brotherhood’s tentacles have expanded to countless countries, including many Western nations. Its offshoots remain prominent from the United States to Somalia. To understand the threat posed by the Muslim Brotherhood, one only needs to analyze its founding charter, current structure, and ideology.
The Muslim Brotherhood was founded in 1928 to present a fundamentalist alternative to the government of Egypt. Since day one, its leaders have endorsed violent jihad as a means to achieve the end of conquest.
Muslim Brotherhood founder Hassan al-Banna, a revered figure in the fundamentalist Islamic community, once said of his goals: “It is the nature of Islam to dominate, not to be dominated, to impose its law on all nations and to extend its power to the entire planet.” Al-Banna, who came to admire Nazi leader Adolf Hitler, called on his followers to constantly “prepare for jihad” and be “lovers of death.”
The Brotherhood's current motto remains: “Allah is our objective. The Prophet is our leader. Qur'an is our law. Jihad is our way. Dying in the way of Allah is our highest hope.”
Even though the Muslim Brotherhood’s ideology represents a direct threat to the United States, its promoters include U.S. “allies” in Turkey and Qatar. Other countries, such as Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Bahrain, Egypt, and Russia have already designated it as a terrorist organization.
Moreover, the Muslim Brotherhood has spawned countless fringe groups from under its umbrella, including the Palestinian terrorist organization Hamas and the predecessor to ISIS in the Sinai Peninsula, Ansar Bayt al-Maqdis.
Its notorious list of alumni include none other than Osama bin Laden, ISIS “caliph” Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, and current al-Qaeda leader Ayman al-Zawahiri.
For far too long, Muslim Brotherhood-connected groups have continued to usurp influence within the Muslim community in America.
For example, the Islamic Society of North America, which is the biggest American Muslim group in the country, is rooted in the Brotherhood. The Council on American Islamic Relations (CAIR) is also deeply connected to the outfit. Policymakers have yet to responded to the growing radicalization carried out by the global jihadi group.
Officially designating the Muslim Brotherhood as a terrorist organization would allow for President Trump to more aggressively fight back against one of the chief radicalization networks not only in the United States, but worldwide. Moreover, crucial Muslim allies of America abroad would benefit tremendously from an America that stands against the Brotherhood’s radical ideology.
