Vote Alert: Defund Sanctuary Cities

Vote Alert: Defund Sanctuary Cities

Passed alongside Kate’s Law, the “No Sanctuary for Criminals Act” would cut federal grants to states and sanctuary cities that refuse to cooperate with federal immigration law enforcement. Those grant funds from the Department of Justice and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) will be redirected to states and localities that follow the law.

Additionally, this bill increases the ability of the DHS to issue a detainer to any federal, state, or local law enforcement personnel for an individual who has been arrested if DHS has probable cause to believe such an individual is an illegal alien.

The sanctuary city policies that lead to the release of illegal aliens held by authorities have led to an epidemic of preventable crimes. In a 2014 analysis of sanctuary cities, ICE found that 8,145 illegal aliens were released over a nine-month period and 1,867 were subsequently re-arrested a total of 4,298 times on nearly 7,500 criminal charges. That’s 7,500 crimes that would have been prevented if these illegal aliens had remained detained.

The Constitution vests the federal government with broad power over immigration in order to protect our sovereignty as a nation and prevent individual states from endangering the rest of the country with invidious open border policies. It is high time for Congress to assert its authority to ensure criminal illegal aliens detained by police are kept off American streets.

The House voted on and passed this bill on June 29, 2017, in a roll call vote of 228-195.
