Vote Alert: Stop Subsidizing Airline Tickets

Vote Alert: Stop Subsidizing Airline Tickets

This vote was on cutting $150 million in taxpayer dollars from the Essential Air Service (EAS), a government program that subsidizes airline ticket prices to small rural airports. Subsidizing airline ticket prices is not an essential role of the government and only serves to distort the marketplace. Other methods of transportation, such as automobile, bus, or train are valid options in rural communities. In some cases, EAS airports are within only a few hours’ drive from a major hub.

With over $20 trillion in debt, nonessential programs like the EAS must be cut by Congress if our nation is serious about tackling our spending problem.

The House of Representatives rejected the amendment on September 6, 2017, with a roll call vote of 140-280.
