Thought police …

“Inflammatory statement” … Yesterday, Rep. Marsha Blackburn, R-Tenn., launched her campaign to replace retiring Sen. Bob Corker, R-Tenn. That launch included a video ad on Twitter. In the ad, Blackburn said she “stopped the sale of baby body parts.”

Twitter told the campaign that statement was “inflammatory” and would not let the video air. Does Twitter want to get into the business of suppressing candidate speech? Should they? CR’s Chris Pandolfo explains how Twitter’s actions were not only outrageous but also offer Blackburn a significant opportunity.

Little coverage … If a media company like Twitter suppressed the speech of a Democratic female member of Congress, the mainstream media would be all over it. Because it was Blackburn and the topic was a barbaric practice by Planned Parenthood, network news didn’t cover it at all. NewsBusters has the story. It wasn’t just the big three. Of the cable news networks, only Fox gave it significant coverage. CNN ignored it, and MSNBC made a passing mention, according to a search on the TVEyes Media Monitoring Suite this morning.

Academic journal caves to threats … This story is similar in a way to the Blackburn story, in that it involves censorship. But it is much worse, because this censorship occurred when the publication was bullied and harassed into taking down a journal article. Thiel Capital managing director Eric Weinstein shared a screen cap from Third World Quarterly.

It showed that the journal withdrew an essay titled “The case for colonialism” after the editorial team “received serious and credible threats of personal violence.” The withdrawal notice linked the threats to publication of the essay. The long and the short of it is that there are thugs who want to ensure that academic study on colonialism remains “settled.”

More Weinstein news …

About that “spiked” Times story … Yesterday I shared a story by Sharon Waxman, a former New York Times writer who claimed the paper spiked a story on Weinstein and sexual abuse back in 2004. Yesterday the Times fired back. The Times’ executive editor, Dean Baquet, responded to Waxman by saying that her reporting at the time did not pass the Times vetting process.

Her editor at the time fired back as well; Politico reports that Jonathan Landman said, “Sharon has now had more than a decade to pursue this story unencumbered by me or any New York Times editor.” Both bring up a good point. Waxman has not published the story at any subsequent outlet she worked at. She should explain why. There are no angels in this story, it seems, in media, in entertainment, or in the legal profession.

CBS hits the Clintons and Obamas with Weinstein … It’s gotten so bad with the mainstream media that when they do their job, it surprises you so much that you have to write about it. NewsBusters took notice that only CBS, of the three major networks, linked Weinstein to the Clintons and Obamas. ABC actually used a photo of Weinstein with Trump at some event, instead of talking about the millions Weinstein has raised for Democrats.

Tell a friend …

I can’t fight back alone against the mainstream media. I need your help. There are two ways you can help. First, send your friends – and even your enemies – over to the WTF MSM!? email subscription page and get them sign up. Second, email me at reno@conservativereview.com with anything questionable you see the media do. Together, we can fight back.
