Are educators, corporations, and the government tracking your child’s data from cradle to grave? At first you may think that notion is preposterous. But it is exactly what it happening with longitudinal data systems. In the name of “better education” for your child, the government and corporations are recording, storing, and using data on your child. They are tracking everything from school medical records to disciplinary actions to test scores and more, as Michelle Malkin exposes in an new episode of “Michelle Malkin Investigates.”

At first you may be skeptical that data mining of your children is happening. Put that skepticism aside, because it is occurring in almost every state of the union. And it is even more far reaching than you would first imagine. Not only are educators and corporations storing your children’s standardized test scores, but they are throwing in school-based medical records, disciplinary actions, and even the way your child navigates a computer learning lesson.

Administrators say that the data will only be used to score how the school districts are doing preparing your kids for the workforce. But the data collected allows for much more than that.

In 2014, the Pioneer Institute, in Boston, released a comprehensive look at how this all works. Their paper, “Cogs in the Machine: Big Data, Common Core, and National Testing,” describes in shocking detail what the government in conjunction with technology companies are currently doing with your children’s private data.

But the new technology has a downside as well. It allows 21st-century disciples of foundational Progressive John Dewey to accomplish what was out of reach before: collecting data on every child, beginning with preschool or even earlier, and using it to track the child throughout his academic and professional career. In this way, theoretically, government “experts” can determine what is successful in education, what isn’t, and what sorts of education and training are most beneficial to produce workers for the global economy. Aside from whether this dream is realistic, it presents myriad dangers to student privacy …

 … As technology advances, initiatives from government, private entities, and public private partnerships have sprung up to eliminate the technical obstacles to increased data-sharing. Although the ambitious inBloom project has faded in the face of withering parental criticism, other projects abound: the Workforce Data Quality Initiative, Unified Data Standards, MyData, ConnectEd, student-unit records, and private companies’ education apps “donated” to schools in exchange for access to student information. This treasure trove of student data is a hugely tempting target for hackers, who have already begun their assaults.

None of the privacy protections currently in place promises reliable protection of student data. The federal Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) has been gutted; Big Data makes anonymization of an individual student’s information practically impossible; opting out of Common Core tests, or replacing them with alternative tests, is of limited benefit; and the push to collect and share student data may engulf even private school and homeschool students … [emphasis added]

The Pioneer paper explains how this data will be used to follow children throughout their entire lives, in order for technocrats to better understand how students can “achieve.” While that sounds fine and dandy there is a somewhat sinister undertone. The sheer amount of data being collected means that these technocrats are trying to also determine what careers they should be preparing students for based solely on early test scores. That sounds an awful lot like the education system in the former Soviet Bloc.

If the technocrats succeed, your child will become just a number, and his or her future could be determined by something as simple as how long it took him or her to learn their colors and shapes in kindergarten.
