A mountain of baby socks reminds of PP’s grisly business

Since the 1973 Roe v. Wade ruling, around 58 million children’s lives have been lost to abortion in America. Of that statistic, Planned Parenthood is responsible for over 300,000 per year. Statistics like these are so familiar to pro-life activists and politicians that they can sometimes lose its meaning and power.

But what if politicians – if all of us – were confronted with the harsh reality of those statistics? What if the same politicians who once again are poised to continue PP’s tax dollar stream had to look directly at the concrete results of what continuing the group’s federal funding means for America’s pre-born population?

On Wednesday, in front of the Capitol building, a group of dedicated pro-lifers made that happen.

Students for Life of America, a college pro-life organization, delivered almost 200,000 baby socks to Congress. Their message? That Planned Parenthood alone is responsible for the death of the children who should be filling those socks.

LifeSite News’ Claire Creighton reported:

After a defund Planned Parenthood rally featuring Sen. Ben Sasse, R-NE, former Rep. Marilyn Musgrave, and pro-life high school students, the group then brought 88,000 baby socks to the office of Speaker of the House Rep. Paul Ryan, R-WI. Each sock represented one baby killed by abortion at Planned Parenthood since President Trump has taken office.

"This Congress pledged to defund Planned Parenthood and the pro-life generation intends to make sure they live up to those promises," Kristan Hawkins, president of Students for Life of America (SFLA), told LifeSiteNews. "Defunding Planned Parenthood isn’t really controversial within the GOP leadership right now." The problem is "they can’t get their act together on other issues."

SFLA will continue collecting baby socks until they have 323,999 – the number of abortions Planned Parenthood commits annually.

The image is striking:

"Each one of those socks should have a little foot in it," Planned Parenthood director-turned-pro-lifer Sue Thayer told attendees, later telling LifeSite that the sheer volume of the socks forced her to “step away” from the makeshift memorial on the east side of the U.S. Capitol building.

Speaking atop the mountain of tiny garments – a brightly colored, but somber reminder of the scale of Planned Parenthood’s gruesome business – Sen. Sasse remarked how important it was to turn statistics about the group into concrete, visible realities, World magazine reports.

“It’s just a devastatingly large number,” Sasse told attendees, “and we need to have images like this so that people start to reflect on the magnitude of the suffering that’s happening out there.”

From here, the socks are going to go on the road, SFLA’s Hawkins said, suggesting that they might even make an appearance on some college campuses in the future.
