Ben Shapiro has become the latest high-profile conservative to join the movement for an Article V convention of states to amend the U.S. Constitution and rein in the out-of-control federal government. The Daily Wire editor-in-chief offered an endorsement of Citizens for Self-Governance’s Convention of States Project.
"I absolutely support the Convention of States Project, designed for fulfilling the Constitutional methodologies for protecting our rights. Article V exists so that the people have the final say, not the federal government,” Shapiro said.
“Yes, it can happen — and yes, it should happen. We should begin by completely restructuring the unconstitutional federal executive bureaucracy; only Congress has constitutional legislative authority. Administrative agencies should not be making law. If you believe the people should decide instead of Washington, D.C., then you should support the Convention of States.”
Townhall’s Cortney O’Brien reports that Mark Meckler, president of Citizens for Self-Governance, is “ecstatic” to have Shapiro join the movement.
“I think he’s one of the smartest guys commenting on politics today,” Meckler said. “I think he has a really unique voice because he’s so much younger than most commentators. He really speaks to Millennials.”
Pursuant to Article V of the U.S. Constitution, states can force Congress to call a convention for proposing constitutional amendments if two-thirds (34) of the state legislatures request one.
Shapiro joins LevinTV host Mark Levin, Fox News host Sean Hannity, and former Sens. Jim DeMint, R-S.C., and Tom Coburn, R-Okla., in support of the mission to “marshal grassroots support for a state-led movement to amend the U.S. Constitution.”
So far, 12 states have adopted resolutions calling for a convention of states. A separate effort calling specifically for a balanced budget amendment currently has the support of 27 states.
