Confirmation DRAMA: Capitol Police forcibly remove protesters at Gina Haspel’s hearing

Two protesters were forcibly removed by Capitol Police Wednesday during the confirmation hearing for CIA director nominee Gina Haspel.

The first protester began shouting from the gallery as Haspel answered a question from Sen. Roy Blunt, R-Mo.

"The question is, what do you do to human beings in U.S. custody? Bloody Gina!" the protester repeatedly shouted. "You are a perjurer!"

Haspel was answering questions from lawmakers about her involvement in the CIA's use of enhanced interrogation techniques on terror suspects. Democrats in the Senate have made a particular effort to zero in on her beliefs, asking if she felt the CIA's past actions were "moral or immoral."

Senator Rand Paul, R-Ky., has joined several Democrats in opposition to Haspel's nomination, once referring to her as "the head cheerleader for waterboarding."

Later, another protester interrupted the hearing, screaming about waterboarding and resisting the efforts of Capitol Police to remove him.

Senate Intelligence Committee Chairman Richard Burr, R-N.C. said this was the last straw.

"If there are any other further disruptions, I will ask the Capitol Police to remove all individuals," he said.
