Over at The Intercept, Glenn Greenwald has a theory about who is behind the campaign to block convicted felon Chelsea Manning from potentially defeating incumbent Maryland Democratic Senator Ben Cardin.

To Greenwald, the dishonorably discharged Manning is a “whistleblower,” a “hero,” and an “icon” for the progressive community. Manning, who regularly tweets things like “fuck the police,” is the natural choice for progressives over Senator Cardin, whom The Intercept writer categorizes as a man of the Democratic establishment.

The former Army private would still be behind bars had it not been for President Obama commuting Manning’s sentence from 35 years to 7 years. While serving in the military, Manning illegally and deliberately released some 750,000 military documents — a combination of classified and unclassified files — to WikiLeaks.
The day after Manning was sentenced, the felon identified as a female and wished to be placed in a female correctional facility.
If promoting a traitor wasn’t bizarre enough, things really take an interesting turn in paragraph five of Greenwald’s piece, when it appears that Greenwald has identified who is responsible for potentially thwarting Manning from achieving victory.
He argues that Sen. Cardin, who is Jewish, has “become one of the Senate’s most reliable and loyal supporters of AIPAC’s agenda and the Israeli government, if not the single most loyal.” It’s an odd accusation, given the fact that Cardin now supports the Iran deal, which is very much a position at odds with Israel’s interests.
Greenwald continues, attacking Cardin for authoring legislation to counter the BDS (Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions) movement that seeks to delegitimize Israel.
It’s entirely unclear what Israel or the “Israel lobby” has to do with stopping a convicted traitor from challenging an incumbent senator who enjoys a +27 approval rating among Maryland Democrats. But then again, Greenwald as a long history of blaming the Jews and Israel for a variety of problems in America and the world at large.
Perhaps Greenwald, who lives in Rio de Janeiro, is losing his grip on American electoral politics. His Jewish conspiracy theory falls short in not recognizing the simple observation that it’s quite unlikely U.S. voters will allow an anti-American traitor and convicted felon into the Senate.
