GOP candidate blasts Maine Sen. Angus King after he compares Russian interference to 9/11 attacks

A Republican candidate for U.S. Senate in Maine blasted comments made by Sen. Angus King, I-Maine, Tuesday after King compared supposed Russian hacking in the 2016 U.S. election to the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

State Sen. Eric Brakey published an edited video of King speaking in Lewiston about the World Trade Center attacks. In the video, King says those attacks were "the beginning of an attack that's continuing today."

"They used airplanes into towers. Now people can use the click of a computer key in Saint Petersburg, Russia, to attack," King said.

"It's the same kind of attack today that occurred in 2001."

“I am appalled that Angus King, on today of all days, compared the brutal terrorist attacks of 9/11 and the murder of over 3,000 innocent Americans to Russian computer hackers," Brakey said in a statement released following King's comments. "The two things are simply incomparable, and reflect the deranged thinking of Angus and his liberal allies."

“Sen. King’s crass statements are an insult to the victims, their families and our first responders. King should retract his statement immediately and apologize for his shameful remark,” Brakey added.

King is spending the 17th anniversary delivering remarks to Maine fire stations.
