The following is an excerpt from Blaze Media’s daily Capitol Hill Brief email newsletter:
At last night’s Democratic debate, Robert “Beto” O’Rourke gave gun rights supporters a loud and clear reminder that the fight against gun confiscation is here. When asked about his gun control plans, O’Rourke said, “Hell yes, we’re going to take your AR-15.” Now his campaign is selling T-shirts with the phrase on it.
And if proudly threatening to violate people’s self-defense and property rights wasn’t enough for one night, O’Rourke’s campaign website later directly called the president of the United States a white supremacist and attempted to back the claim up with “proof.” His campaign also tweeted out a picture of a rifle with a grenade launcher attached to it with the caption “Beto has a ban for that”; grenade launchers are already covered by the National Firearms Act.
But that wasn’t all. Elizabeth Warren also admitted something that gun control proponents have warned about for a long time. “It’s not going to be one and done on this,” Warren said of Democratic gun control plans. “We’re going to do it and we’re going to have to do it again and we’re going to have to come back some more. Until we cut the number of gun deaths in this country significantly.”
Yes, folks: There is indeed a slippery slope on gun control, and every time gun rights supporters cave to the political demand to “do something,” we slide down it just a little bit further. Keep that reality in mind as politicians fumble around for a bill to “do something” over the coming weeks.
