If personnel is policy …

If personnel is policy …

"Personnel is policy." ~ Morton Blackwell, The Leadership Institute

A major shake-up at the White House occurred on Friday, as President Obama named a telegenic, charismatic liberal from the world of high finance to fill the position of communications director. Like Obama, Anthony Scaramucci is for gun control, the killing of unborn children, abandoning marriage, and universal health care, and he believes in manmade global warming.

Unfortunately, everything I just wrote is true — except Scaramucci wasn't appointed by President Obama, though with these beliefs he certainly could've been.

Scaramucci was appointed by President Trump.

If Morton Blackwell's axiom that "personnel is policy" is indeed true, uh-oh. And I say this as someone who thought Trump hiring the Grover Dill of the Republican Party, Sean Spicer, to be a primary face of his presidency was an epic fail — which is exactly what it turned out to be. It didn't take long for Spicer to make Melissa McCarthy great again and actually make Team Trump's messaging even less likable.

So, yes, a change needed to be made. In fact, it needed to be made from the nanosecond Trump chose Spicer in the first place. And a little birdie I know, who knows all the players here, told me he believes Scaramucci will be a dramatic upgrade and understands his job is to support the president's agenda and not his own.

I hope my little birdie is correct. I really do. I grow tired of being right only on the bad stuff. I'd like optimism to pay off at least once. Hope is in short supply these days, because as conservatives we know it can always get worse.

I mean, I'm sure the next struggling Democrat president will comb the rosters of the NRA and National Right to Life to hire his communications director. Okay, that'll never happen, but hey, "big tent!"

A tent so big that now the guy helping a non-ideological Republican president message his all-of-the-above beliefs happens to have more in common with Rachel Maddow than Ronald Reagan. But, hey, he went after CNN once, so we're sold.

That's who we are now. A reactionary movement getting its clicks and jollies off causing our opponents to melt down not over our policy victories, since we don't really have any, but our killer social media memes and demands for retractions. For though Scaramucci is a Democrat voter, we will now be told once more that yes, we need to become like what we oppose to beat what we oppose. Dang if that strategery ain't working out just swimmingly thus far.

So our fake binary choice debate will continue. Suddenly the liberal media will hate a guy who's one of them (and even called Trump a "hack" once), just because he gets his paycheck from a Republican president. And then a guy who embraces and repeats nearly every progressive talking point will suddenly become our hero, just because the liberal media doesn't like him. Conservatism isn't our thing as much as cheering on liberals for irritating fellow liberals.

Congrats to Scaramucci, though. He's suddenly about to enter the coveted ranks of 4-D chess masters. At least until Trump has used him up and gets sick of him, like he seemingly does everyone else.
