Imagine if Jane Sanders were Heidi Cruz

Imagine if Jane Sanders were Heidi Cruz

Based on the virtually non-existent media coverage, you have probably not heard that Jane Sanders, the wife of Senator Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., is allegedly under investigation by the FBI for bank fraud. After the Daily Caller News Foundation broke the story back in March, only a handful of other news organizations have picked up on the story.

Ask yourself, if it had been Goldman Sachs banker Heidi Cruz, the wife of Senator Ted Cruz, R-Texas, do you think the coverage would be as light? The answer is no; it would be wall-to-wall coverage across the mainstream media.

Here’s what the Daily Caller reported.

Federal investigators are conducting interviews in Florida regarding accusations Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders’ wife, Jane Sanders, defrauded a bank while serving as president of the now-defunct Burlington College.

Allegations Jane Sanders falsified loan documents to expand the campus of Burlington College, which collapsed into bankruptcy in May 2016, swirled more than a year prior. The Daily Caller News Foundation first broke the news of the allegations against Mrs. Sanders in March 2015. The Department of Justice and the FBI will not confirm the existence of an investigation, but recent interviews conducted by officials from the FBI and the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC), independently confirmed to TheDCNF, suggest an investigation is ongoing.

A Google News search performed earlier this week shows that only six other outlets have touched the news. As of last Monday morning, The Hill had covered the story. Also, joining The Hill are AOL, Hot Air, Russia’s RT, the Inquisitr, and something called Press TV. As of Tuesday morning, none of the big mainstream news outlets had covered the update to the story. For instance there has been nothing in the nation’s “paper of record,” the New York Times, nor the Washington Post.

The silence from the MSM is deafening.

If this had been a story about Heidi Cruz, not Jane Sanders, there would have been coverage every half-hour all weekend. Countless think pieces would have been written about the intersection of big business and politics, and how Cruz might serve as a corrupting influence on her husband. But because this is a story about the spouse of the runner-up in the Democratic primary, not the GOP primary, it isn’t treated as news.

It’s not only print and online outlets that aren’t covering the story. The only cable news station to cover Sanders was Fox Business, which did so on two programs Monday: “Varney and Company” and “Risk & Reward with Deirdre Bolton.” On CNN, MSNBC, and Fox News, the story has received no coverage.

The only coverage on a broadcast network was by Seth Meyers, who joked on SNL, “According to a new report, Senator Bernie Sanders’ wife, Jane Sanders, is being investigated by the FBI for alleged bank fraud. Even worse, her husband is being investigated by the local deli for alleged Splenda theft.” Kudos to Meyers for covering, even it if was to downplay the allegations through humor.

Media bias isn’t only evident in how the media choose to cover a story; it is also evident by which stories they choose to cover. Covering up the alleged crimes of a spouse of a high-ranking leftist politician is just as much bias as covering it with a slanted view.
