Jihad strikes Minnesota, right in the heart of refugee country

Fifteen years after 9/11, the internal jihad within our country has become so ubiquitous that regular attacks now go unreported, underreported, or unidentified by major media sources and law enforcement.

Just this weekend, there was a bombing in Manhattan that injured 29 people, an explosion in Seaside, New Jersey, and a stabbing in St. Cloud, Minnesota that injured nine. While the details concerning the first two events are still murky, the attack in Minnesota was clearly an act of jihad. Which raises the obvious question: Why does our federal government continue to seed Minnesota with more refugees from the Middle East before getting a handle on the existing problems of assimilation and radicalization?

On Saturday night, a Somali-American jihadist went on a stabbing spree in a St. Cloud mall until he was shot dead by an off-duty police officer. According to St. Cloud Police Chief William Blair Anderson, as reported by the Star Tribune, the suspect “reportedly asked at least one victim whether they were Muslim before assaulting them, and referred to Allah during the attacks.”

Astoundingly, despite having the information, the local police chief still couldn’t figure out the motive:

Anderson declined to call the stabbing a terrorist attack, saying the motive for the attacks isn't known yet. "We will be diligent and get to the bottom of this," Anderson said, adding that St. Cloud Police had prior contact with the suspect, but only related to traffic stops.

Now, the media outlets are reporting that the English-language organ for the Islamic State is claiming responsibility for the attack in St. Cloud. Somali community members reportedly identified the attacker as Dahir Adan, a junior at St. Cloud University. According to YnetNews, Adan arrived in America along with his family 15 years ago.

The point here is that even if ISIS didn’t directly plan the attack, which is likely the case, it doesn’t mean this is not an act of Islamic terrorism. In fact, the predominant threat we now face is from individual jihadis from the thousands of radical Islamists we’ve admitted into the country instead of learning the lessons of 9/11.

While we wait for confirmation of details, it’s important to hark back to the warning from Minnesota's U.S. attorney Andrew Luger, regarding the terror recruiting problem in the Somali community:

To be clear: We have a terror-recruiting problem in Minnesota. And this case demonstrates how difficult it is to put an end to recruiting here. Parents and loved ones should know that there is not one master recruiter organizing in the Somali community locally. What this case shows is that the person radicalizing your son, your brother, your friend, may not be a stranger. It may be their best friend right here in town.

Given that more than 40 known Somali-Americans from the Minneapolis area have joined the Islamic State or other terror groups since 2008, why would our federal government continue to import more without getting a handle on the situation? As I noted last week, while most of the refugee debate has been focused on Syrian refugees, we continue to admit roughly 8,000-10,000 Somali refugees every year. If nothing is done to block President Obama’s new refugee plan before October 1 in the annual budget bill, Obama will bring in another 110,000 refugees from around the world. In particular, Obama has raised the sub-cap for African refugees by 10,000, in addition to the increase from the Arab part of Asia.

While the details of this weekend’s jihad attack in St. Cloud are still being withheld from the public, what is clear is that this is part of the growing phenomenon whereby individual jihadists fulfill their personal obligation to attack the infidel — as opposed to a command-and-control style attack directed by a foreign terror group. This is the security predicament that has confronted Europe for many years and is now threatening our security on a daily basis.

Since 1993, we’ve admitted roughly 115,000 Somali immigrants nationwide — mostly through the refugee program — at an average clip of 10,000 a year. Almost 100 percent of them are Muslim. Minnesota is home to at least 30,000 Somalis. Given the threat of individual jihad cultivated by radicalized communities within our country, it simply defies logic that we would continue admitting Somali refugees 25 years later and flooding areas like St. Cloud with more refugees than they can absorb and assimilate.

For Congress to give Obama a blank-check budget bill this week without addressing the security problems with refugees would represent the most appalling dereliction of duty.
