On Monday morning, House Intelligence Committee Chairman Devin Nunes, R-Calif., responded to vicious media attacks claiming he is a “Russian agent” or has otherwise been compromised by the Russians.
“As of right now, I’m not aware of it,” Nunes said in jest. “But they work very mysteriously. For the last year we’ve been chasing Russian ghosts around that were colluding with the Trump campaign. We haven’t found them yet.”
Nunes has come under fire from Democrats and the media for authoring a memo that outlined how the FBI misrepresented the infamous Steele dossier to a FISA court to obtain a warrant to surveil a former member of the Trump campaign. The FBI failed to disclose that the information contained in the dossier was paid for by the Hillary Clinton campaign, put together by a political partisan who was “desperate” that Donald Trump lose the election, and unverified. Further, the memo claims the FBI lied to the court about Steele leaking information from the dossier to the media.
Democrats, attempting to shield the classified memo from publication, accused Nunes of “trading our national security interests for political benefits” by releasing it. Upon the memo’s publication Friday, it was evident there was no compromising national security information contained in the memo.
Nunes accused the Democrats of leaking information from the committee to create false narratives and obfuscate the fact that the Democrats and the Hillary Clinton campaign paid for the unverified dossier that the FBI used to get a warrant to surveil former Trump campaign adviser Carter Page.
“Mr. Schiff knows that he’s spreading a false narrative there. But that’s not new for him, he’s spread false narratives the entire time,” Nunes said. “So, the Democrats are well aware that I did not leak information. However, for a year they stayed quiet. They advocated for my removal from the committee. And why is that? It’s because we’ve been successful at getting to the bottom of a lot of real problems with the institutions in our government.”
Turning on the Democrats, Nunes claimed they are hypocritically attacking Republicans for leaking classified information while leaking themselves. “We know that there has been almost 100 leaks that we believe have come from the Democrats on the House Intelligence Committee,” Nunes said.
The congressman is embracing the heightened attacks from the Democrats and from the media as a sign that House Republicans are getting closer to the truth of Obama administration surveillance abuses and institutional corruption.
The key thing to remember is that the Democrats lied about Nunes’ memo containing sensitive national security information in order to block its release. The media repeated the Democrats’ lies without a second thought. They have lost their credibility on this issue and should not be taken seriously.
