OPEN SEAT EXTRAVAGANZA: Sen. Bob Corker to retire in Tennessee

Senator Bob Corker, R-Tenn., announced Tuesday that he will not be seeking reelection to the Senate in 2018.

"After much thought, consideration and family discussion over the past year, Elizabeth and I have decided that I will leave the United States Senate when my term expires at the end of 2018," Corker said in a statement, reported by The Hill.

Corker, the chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, is the first member of Congress to announce his retirement in the 2018 midterm cycle. Once considered a potential nominee for secretary of state in the Trump administration, Corker drew widespread opposition from conservatives, most notably for his role in the Iran nuclear deal.

Andrew Ogles, the director for Americans for Prosperity’s Tennessee chapter, declared his candidacy against Corker earlier this month and now runs unopposed for the Republican Senate nomination.

"Over the past several months it has become increasingly clear that too many of our elected officials in Washington are failing our country, failing to fulfill their promises, and failing our future," Ogles said in a press release announcing his candidacy. "Republican majorities in the House and Senate have not been able to repeal and replace Obamacare, balance the budget, or cut taxes.”

"Congress now appears more focused on providing amnesty to illegals to placate so-called Dreamers while refusing to build the wall and secure the American Dream for American citizens," he said.

Other potential candidates for the GOP nomination in Tennessee include state Sen. Mark Green and former state Rep. Joe Carr, who challenged Sen. Lamar Alexander in 2014.
