As the Republican primary election results poured in for a heavily contested congressional district in Texas, Republican candidate Chip Roy had more meaningful things to do than sit around at a campaign party bean-counting his votes.

Chip Roy is running for the Republican nomination in Texas’ 21st Congressional District. The district, located in the central part of the state outside Austin and San Antonio, is currently held by Republican incumbent Rep. Lamar Smith. The race became a free-for-all when Smith declared he would not seek re-election last November and 18 Republicans jumped into the race.

The good news for this family man and conservative is that Roy finished last night’s primary race for Congress with the most votes, 19,319, earning 27.05 percent of total votes cast. The second-place finisher, Matt McCall, received 12,088 votes, or 16.93 percent. Since no Republican won majority of fifty percent plus one vote, there will be a runoff election for the GOP nomination held on Tuesday, May 22, 2018. Early voting starts on May 14 and ends on May 18.

Roy earned the early support of conservatives with the endorsement of his former boss, Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, on the second day of his campaign for Congress. Roy was also endorsed by U.S. Secretary of Energy Rick Perry, conservative groups like the Club for Growth and the House Freedom Fund, and conservative figures like Sen. Mike Lee, R-Utah, LevinTV host Mark Levin, CRTV host Steve Deace, and radio host Erick Erickson.

In an interview with Conservative Review senior editor Daniel Horowitz, Roy said that his top legislative priorities are spending, health care, immigration, and judicial reform.
