Poll: Majority of Americans say Mueller probe is politically motivated

It's been one year since special counsel Robert Mueller was appointed to investigate Russian interference in the 2016 election. In that year, the American people have learned that Mueller's team of lawyers are mostly Democrats, that there is no Donald Trump crime being investigated, that the investigation seemingly has no bounds, and that no evidence has been presented that Donald Trump or his campaign colluded with the Russians to defeat Hillary Clinton.

Accordingly, most Americans now believe the investigation is politically motivated, a new CBS News poll finds.

The poll found that 53 percent of Americans think Mueller's investigation is politically motivated, while 44 percent think it is justified.

Still, a vast majority of Americans, 76 percent, believe that President Trump should cooperate if he's asked to be interviewed for the investigation. That's down from 84 percent in January.

There is a partisan split in the poll: The vast majority of Republicans say they want Congress to bring the investigation to an end. Democrats and independents think the investigations should continue uninterrupted by Congress.

This poll was a survey of 1,101 adults conducted by telephone from May 3 to May 6. It has a margin of error of +/-3%.
