Powerless, pathetic Democrats turn Kavanaugh hearing into circus

It didn't take long for Judge Brett Kavanaugh's Supreme Court confirmation hearing to devolve into a circus.

Democratic senators are spitting objections, interrupting opening statements, motioning to adjourn the hearing, and otherwise being nuisances to derail the confirmation for Trump's nominee to the Supreme Court. Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, wasn't even allowed to get through his opening statement before Sen. Kamala Harris, D-Calif., interrupted him with an objection related to a batch of 42,000 documents that were released to the Senate Monday night related to Kavanaugh's service in President George W. Bush's administration.

Harris said the Senate "cannot possibly move forward" before reviewing these documents. Sen. Richard Blumenthal, D-Conn., motioned to adjourn the hearing.

Adding to the chaos are protesters, who cheered the antics of the Democrats and demanded a "no" vote on Kavanaugh.

Grassley ruled the objections out of order.

“We have said for a long period of time that we were going to proceed on this very day, and I think we ought to give the American people the opportunity to hear whether Judge Kavanaugh should be on the Supreme Court or not,” Grassley said.

He fought back against Democrat claims that the Trump administration is using executive privilege to hide Kavanaugh documents from the Senate, noting that there are expectations of confidentiality for the work Kavanaugh did as an attorney in the White House counsel office. He noted that the Senate never requested Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg's attorney-client privilege-protected American Civil Liberties Union documents at her confirmation hearing.

This obstruction is to be expected. The larger point here is that the Democrats know they cannot stop Kavanaugh's confirmation, because Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., invoked the nuclear option for SCOTUS nominees and Republicans only need 51 votes to confirm Kavanaugh. There is literally nothing Democrats can do to stop Kavanaugh's confirmation. So these clowns are simply trying to make good TV ahead of the midterm elections.

Enjoy with some theme music:
