Republicans scheme to give illegal immigrants citizenship

Democrats and Republicans are working together on a deal to grant amnesty to “Dreamers” — illegal immigrants who came to the United States as children — and are insisting that any such deal include a path to citizenship for illegal aliens.

In September, President Donald Trump kept a major campaign promise by rescinding President Obama’s illegal Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals executive order. After the repeal of the order, Congress was given a six-month timetable and instructed by the president to put together a deal that legalized DACA amnesty. The president has pledged to sign that deal when it reaches his desk.

GOP senators Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, and John Cornyn, R-Texas, have proposed legislation that would extend DACA amnesty for three years but also require tougher border security, impose a stronger e-verify program, crack down on chain migration, and target sanctuary city funding.

Democrats panned the proposal, saying it wasn’t a “good faith effort to provide protection for the Dreamers, including those who were enrolled in DACA.”

“The laundry list of unrelated immigration bills which they have offered is designed to delay and stop any serious bipartisan effort to solve this crisis created by the Trump administration,” Senate Minority Whip Dick Durbin, D-Ill., said.

It’s not just the tougher immigration law enforcement. Democrats want to make illegal immigrants citizens, and according to a report from Roll Call, several Republicans are joining them.

“I don’t support a final resolution without a path to citizenship,” said Sen. Lindsey Graham, who is co-sponsoring an alternative bill preferred by Democrats, the DREAM Act.

Senator John McCain, R-Ariz., has likewise said he’s “always supported Dreamers having a path to citizenship.” And Senators Thom Tillis, R-N.C., and James Lankford, R-Okla., have indicated they will not support any measure that does not grant citizenship to DACA recipients. “I think that it will not be a permanent solution if we fail to do that,” Thillis said. “I think we have to continue to work on it.”

Let’s be very clear. Amnesty for illegal immigration is never a “permanent solution.” Each time Congress grants amnesty, it encourages a new wave of illegal immigrants to flood to the United States. If Congress agrees that there is a blanket entitlement for children who came here illegally now to become citizens, what about the next wave of illegal immigrants who bring children here? Will they be entitled to amnesty too? How could you possibly argue against it when you’ve done it once before?

Then what about the parents? Are we going to grant amnesty and citizenship to “Dreamers” and then “break up families” by refusing to do so for their parents? The argument for amnesty and citizenship for all illegal immigrants necessarily follows from giving DACA recipients amnesty and citizenship.

This is fundamentally unjust. There are people from every corner of the Earth who try to come to the United States legally. They follow American law. They respect American law. And their place in line is being cut in favor of groups of people who have no respect for American borders or American laws.

What these Republicans intend is irresponsible, unfair, and despicable. And if such a plan to grant cheap citizenship reaches President Trump’s desk, he ought to veto it and tell Congress to respect American sovereignty and respect the American rule of law.
