Cruz delivers a brutal beatdown of Senate Dems attacking Gorsuch

Senator Ted Cruz, R-Texas, called partisan attacks on Judge Neil Gorsuch’s judicial philosophy “absurd” in Monday’s first confirmation hearing for President Trump’s nominee to fill the vacant seat on the Supreme Court.

Judge Gorsuch has come under fire recently for allegedly having a “web of ties to secretive billionaire,” as The New York Times described it. The news that Gorsuch has represented sports magnate Philip Anschutz has Democrats and their allies in the media insinuating that Judge Gorsuch’s agenda will favor Big Business over the little guy.

During the opening statements of Monday’s first confirmation hearing, Sen. Ted Cruz tore into that argument.

“Many probably believe they have no choice but to try and manufacture attacks against Judge Gorsuch … just to preserve their own political future and protect themselves from primaries back home,” Cruz said, condemning the antics of his Democratic colleagues.

“Some Democrat tried to slander Judge Gorsuch as ‘being against the little guy’ because he has dared to rule based on the law – the law that Congress has passed – and not on the specific identity of the specific litigants appearing before him.”

“This is absurd,” the Texas senator proclaimed.

Cruz blasted the Democrats, reminding the audience watching at home that it is the Democratic Party and progressive policies assailing nuns, attacking religious liberty, and squashing freedoms — not an originalist interpretation of the U.S. Constitution.

“You really need to take a long look in the mirror If one day you find yourself attacking nuns, attacking the Little Sisters of the Poor, and then the next day you find yourself orating on the need to protect the little guy,” Cruz said.

“A judge’s job is not to protect the little guy, or the big guy. A judge swears an oath to uphold the Constitution and to follow the law fairly and partially and equally for every litigant — little or big.”
