Sen. Orrin Hatch: Barrett is 'tremendous,' but Dems are only for Democrat women

Speaking on Fox News Monday afternoon, Sen. Orrin Hatch, R-Utah, a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, heaped praise on Amy Coney Barrett as a potential nominee for the Supreme Court.

Hatch, who is the longest-serving member on the Judiciary Committee and has seen fifteen Senate confirmation fights for Supreme Court justices, said Barrett is an "outstanding" law professor and a "tremendous woman."

"If the president chooses her, then the Democrats are going to have to face the fact that they're really not for women unless they're Democrat women," Hatch said.

He recalled that Barrett performed well the last time she appeared before the Senate Judiciary Committee as a nominee for the Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals.

"When she appeared before the Judiciary Committee before, she did very, very well," Hatch said. "There's no question she's a tremendous woman, a mother of seven children, a law professor. If you were looking for somebody to pick for the Supreme Court, you'd have to say that she's an excellent choice."

He predicted that a confirmation fight for Barrett would be "vicious," but expressed confidence that she could take the heat.

"Barrett can very well handle herself. She's very smart, she knows what she's talking about, she's a law professor, I really have a high regard for her," Hatch said. But he also shared his confidence in every potential pick on the "final four" short list, including Judges Brett Kavanaugh, Raymond Kethledge, and Thomas Hardiman.

"The four that are mentioned, they're all really outstanding people," Hatch said. "Any one of them would make a good justice on the Supreme Court, and I think it's going to be tough for the Democrats to face that."

Hatch predicted that "whoever" Trump picks from the "final four" will be confirmed by the Senate.

"It should go through; the Republicans are in control of the Senate, and we all know how important this is," Hatch said.
