Senators revive unconstitutional No-Fly List gun ban

A bipartisan group of senators is reviving a previously proposed law that could strip Americans of their Second Amendment rights without due process.

Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, along with eight other senators including Jeff Flake, R-Ariz., and Pat Toomey, R-Penn., are introducing the Terrorist Firearms Prevention Act, which creates a "no fly, no buy" policy that would prohibit individuals on the No-Fly List from purchasing firearms.

“Our bipartisan bill is based on one simple principle: if you are considered to be too dangerous to fly on an airplane, you should not be able to buy a firearm,” said Collins. “This bill is a sensible step we can take right now to reform our nation’s gun laws while protecting the Second Amendment rights of law-abiding Americans. I will continue to work with my colleagues on both sides of the aisle to advance this legislation and close the loophole that allows known and suspected terrorists to legally purchase firearms.”

“Terrorists shouldn’t have access to guns, and this legislation has the teeth to make sure they don’t," said Sen. Flake. “This bill ensures robust due process protections, and should be passed. Restricting those who appear on the 'No Fly' list from purchasing firearms is a logical step that is long overdue.”

The policy sounds great, right? No one wants terrorists to be able to purchase firearms. But who exactly are the "suspected" terrorists? There are approximately 16,000 U.S. citizens and lawful permanent residents on the No-Fly List. It is known that Americans are mistakenly put on this list. Depriving innocent Americans who wind up on this list of their right to purchase a firearm is an egregious, unconstitutional violation of their liberties. This policy is also irrelevant to the mass shooting that occurred in Parkland, Florida.

This bill is another deceptively simple law that would virtue-signal instead of actually address the problem of mass shootings, while depriving Americans of their rights.
