Steve Bannon is out. Only liberals are left

The only ones left are liberals.

From the beginning of the Trump presidency, there were three warring factions in the White House, each vying for the president’s favor to push the agenda in their direction.

Jared Kushner and Ivanka Trump, along with Gary Cohn and Dina Powell, are the New York liberals President Trump brought with him from the finance world inhabited by Goldman-Sachs. Democrat donors all, they have several allies in the Cabinet, including Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross, Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin, national security adviser H.R. McMaster, and Secretary of State Rex Tillerson.

They have resisted the most conservative policies put forward by the president — urging for toned down rhetoric on immigration, opposing the ban on transgender soldiers, resisting changes to Obama’s nuclear deal with Iran.

Opposed to them was the nationalist, populist wing led by WH chief strategist Stephen K. Bannon and his uneasy alliance with Reince Priebus. The third faction, the Republican establishment, had their champion in Priebus, the former head of the Republican National Committee, who served as chief of staff for the president – directing WH personnel and serving as a liaison between President Trump and Republican leadership in Congress. Priebus left at the end of July.

Bannon is gone today.

With his ouster, the New Yorkers have taken over. Jared Kushner and Ivanka Trump hold the keys to the president’s agenda, and they will undoubtedly push it in an even more liberal direction.

Now, where will conservatives turn? Bannon, of the populist wing, at least had ties to the conservative movement from his tenure at Breitbart News. Several members of the House Freedom Caucus felt they could turn to Bannon to have a listening ear in the White House on major policy fights. That link is severed.

With Bannon gone, President Trump will have to rely on his own judgement to resist the liberal and D.C. establishment influences surrounding him. Can he do it? The president has already proved susceptible to the influence of the Swamp in endorsing Mitch McConnell’s favored candidate for Senate in Alabama.

Conservatives have lost on Obamacare repeal this year. It seems that conservatives are set to lose, and lose big, on the upcoming fights on the debt limit, budget, and tax reform. If President Trump can rouse himself to defend the agenda he campaigned on, something might be salvaged from the wreckage of failed Republican leadership.

But that seems unlikely.
