Student group at Goldsmiths, University of London, promotes 'gulags' for 'anti trans bigots'; gets suspended

LGBTQ+ Goldsmiths, a student group at Goldsmiths, University of London, defended Soviet Union-style gulags as a "compassionate, non-violent course of action" to deal with "anti trans bigots" in 2018.

In a tweet thread presented here, LGBTQ+ Goldsmiths explained that the forced labor camps established under communist dictator Joseph Stalin were not really that bad and have modern applications for individuals who oppose transgender ideology.

The hard Left student group faced backlash for its tweets, which are now hidden since the LGBTQ+ Goldsmiths account was made protected.

According to a 1993 study of Soviet data, an estimated 1,053,829 people died in the gulags from 1934 to 1953. Due to inaccuracies in Soviet record-keeping, other scholars estimate that between 1.5 million and 1.7 million people died in Stalin's labor camps during this period.

LGBTQ+ Goldsmiths is a student group that provides "support, information, advice, and events for lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, queer, questioning, asexual, intersex, pansexual, polyamorous people in and around Goldsmiths College London."

In a statement made to the Daily Mail, the Goldsmiths Student Union condemned the tweets and stated that the LGBTQ+ group has been suspended.

We condemn the abhorrent content of the tweets and they are in complete opposition to the views and values of the Students’ Union.

The society have broken multiple union policies and procedures, including failing to adhere to our code of conduct, and we have issued multiple requests for the group to delete the tweets.

As such, the society have been suspended and disaffiliated from the Students’ Union, pending investigation.

A spokesman for Goldsmiths, University of London, supported the Student Union's decision.

Goldsmiths has a diverse and inclusive community with many people caring deeply about trans rights.

In this exchange, the language used was clearly inappropriate and we support the decision of the Students' Union to suspend the student society with immediate effect.
