The indefensible Cork-screwing of America’s Iran policy

Sen. Bob Corker, R-Tenn (F, 45%) did far more than any of his Republican colleagues in the Senate to fight for a deal that vastly enriched the Islamic supremacist nation of Iran. In his dealings with President Obama, Corker authored the Iran Nuclear Agreement Review Act of 2015, which undermined the Senate’s treaty power in the Constitution.

He provided a path for President Obama to hand over an estimated $150 billion to the mullahs in Tehran, and now Corker wants to make sure his legacy legislation stands. Sen. Corker wants President-elect Donald Trump to stick with his nuclear deal, which puts Iran on the path to a nuclear bomb in the next decade, according to estimates.

Corker said over the weekend that ripping up the Iran deal would create a “crisis.” Instead, “we will begin to radically enforce it,” Corker recommended.

"To me the prudent course of action is to make sure you enforce it, that you hold the UN Security Council accountable," he added. "And in the event the agreement falls apart, it's someone else that is causing it to fall apart, not a president coming in on day one and ripping up the agreement."

Seemingly unbeknownst to the Senate Foreign Relations Committee chairman,  Iran has already abandoned its end of the bargain. They have violated the nuclear deal on several occasions. Whether it is testing ballistic missiles or surpassing a threshold limit on nuclear material, Tehran appears to hold very little interest in keeping to its commitments.

Furthermore, Iran’s military has become more and more hostile to America since the deal’s passage. Their soldiers have captured American sailors in international waters, and their patrol boats continually harass American vessels patrolling the Gulf. Friday prayers continue to end with chants of “Death to America,” and the country’s leadership remains annihilationist in its approach to the United States.

This is why Obama’s Iran deal was incredibly unpopular from the start. Iran showed no signs of changing its behavior and the president rewarded them with an influx in cash and international legitimacy. Sen. Corker, for his part, continues to push the fictitious narrative that the Iran deal has stopped Iran’s militant aggression.

In fact, it has done the opposite. Iran continues to arm and aid terrorist groups in Hamas, Hezbollah, and the Houthis in Yemen. Iran supports the Assad regime in its genocidal war in Syria. And the regime in Tehran continues to push its expansionist, Islamist ideology worldwide.

President-elect Trump should listen to the American people, not to Sen. Corker, and tear up the Iran deal on Jan. 20, 2017. The Corker-Obama legacy on Iran must end in favor of the time-tested “Peace through Strength” approach to rein in Iran’s militancy. The Iran deal, like Bill Clinton’s North Korea deal, or Neville Chamberlain’s Munich Agreement, should be put in its proper place in history: in the dustbin.
