The Left celebrates Robert Mueller’s ‘brass-knuckle' tactics

The investigative team led by special counsel Robert Mueller is facing criticism for “unusually aggressive tactics” and for being leakier than the broken kitchen sink in my last apartment. But the Left is cheering “Hurricane Mueller” right along anyway.

The scope of the election-meddling investigation seems to be rapidly widening as leaks to the media from earlier this week indicate Mueller is requesting extensive internal documents from the White House. The subject matter of these documents ranges from the removals of Michael Flynn and James Comey, to the phone records of Air Force One concerning Trump’s meeting with Russian officials.

Between midnight raids on former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort’s house and the numerous leaks, it feels as though Mueller’s team is not so much trying to find the truth as it is attempting to shake down and intimidate subjects of the investigation. According to FoxNews.com, Mueller’s “brass-knuckle” tactics are drawing concerns from the legal community.

“Here is a United States citizen where the FBI is coming in, picking his lock, and raiding his home in the early morning, over what? It doesn’t matter which side you’re on. It’s just crazy. We’re not the Soviet Union. It’s appalling,” said Tom Kirkendall, a prominent Houston attorney.

National Review’s Andy McCarthy, a former federal prosecutor, believes the investigative team could be trying to leverage these leaks against Manafort to convince him to flip on President Trump.

“Look, they clearly went out of their way to intimidate Manafort with the brass-knuckle way they did the search of his Virginia home,” McCarthy told FoxNews.com. “They are trying to squeeze him, so I would not put it past them to use leaks if they think that might help increase the pressure on Manafort to flip. But we don't have slam-dunk evidence that they are behind the leaks.”

There may not be “slam-dunk evidence,” but media knowledge of certain details of the case seem to be the sort of information only members of the investigative team would know.

Consider what the recent string of leaks have told us: federal agents picked the lock on Paul Manafort’s house; that Mueller’s team told Manafort he would be indicted after breaking in; that Manafort’s phone was wiretapped during the 2016 election; and that Manafort offered to give secret briefings on the 2016 election to a Russian billionaire.

But none of this seems to bother the Left — and all its cheerleading — in the least.

Trevor Noah, the unfunny leftist who replaced the other unfunny leftist Jon Stewart on “The Daily Show,” praised “Hurricane Mueller” during his Thursday night monologue

"Surprise visits in the middle of the night, all up in his phone?" Noah asked. "Ladies, get you a man who wants you as bad as Mueller wants Manafort."

Indeed, these leaked reports of the escalation of the investigation are exciting the Left, which presumes that Manafort, and by extension President Trump, are guilty of colluding with the Russians during the 2016 election.

Not one of these guys finds it bizarre that the secrecy and integrity of the investigation have been compromised. Further, they are unconcerned with the character and ethics of the investigative team.

Fox News’ report highlights how one of the prominent members of Mueller’s team, U.S. attorney Andrew Weissmann, has “overseen a series of controversial prosecutions that ultimately resulted in dismissed convictions and formal allegations of prosecutorial misconduct.”

Examples of Weissmann’s alleged misconduct include sending a man to a maximum-security prison without sufficient evidence to show he violated the law; overseeing another conviction that was unanimously overturned by the Supreme Court; and having a complaint filed against him in 2012 alleging “witness threatening, withholding exculpatory evidence, and the use of ‘false and misleading summaries.’”

Alarm bells should be going off for any observer who cares about justice and rule of law.

But the Left is not interested in justice. It merely wants blood. And if the Democrats gain control of Congress, they will use any ammunition that may come from the leakers of this investigation to call for President Trump’s impeachment.

That is the game, and the Left is all too happy to go along with it.
