US Syrian refugee numbers set to exceed 10,000 this year

For the most part, this past weekend was the first slow news cycle in a long time – more typical of a hot August with Congress and most politicos on vacation. However, there are two important stories from this past weekend that portend trouble for our national security. The first is the continued daily terror attacks in Europe. The second is the news that the flow of Syrian refugees into our country may exceed Obama’s goal of resettling 10,000 individuals by the end of next month. Unfortunately, the first story makes the second one all the more concerning, as we continue to follow in the footsteps of Europe.

Attacks in Europe have become so rampant that it’s hard to keep track of the daily details. The inimitable Patrick Poole has the full list of Islamic attacks in Europe over the past twenty months. “Since January 2015, there have been 17 terrorist attacks across Europe, killing 258 people and injuring hundreds more,” notes Poole. In the latest attack, two police officers in Charleroi, Belgium were wounded when an Algerian Muslim attacked them with a machete while shouting Allahu Akbar.

It would be nice if we could take solace in the relative security of the two vast oceans separating North America from Europe, but no ocean can protect us from insidious and suicidal immigration policies. The New York Times reported over the weekend that Obama is well on his way to meeting the goal of resettling 10,000 refugees from Syria this fiscal year and will possibly surpass that number by next month. This comes as Obama continues to violate other congressional statutes and abuse temporary protected status policies by allowing other Syrians to remain in the country indefinitely.

The media will continue to show interviews with seemingly innocuous families who have lovely children. But as we glance ominously across the pond at Europe, we must remember that so many of these 20-30 year-old jihadists were brought to the West when they were small children or yet to be born. There is no way to vet the children of Sharia-adherent parents when they move to western countries. As long as assimilation continues to be a problem, we will face a long-term security crisis from this wave of Middle Eastern immigration. And as I’ve noted before, many of these refugees are being dumped in small-to-mid-sized American cities, which are radically divergent from their cultures.

Obama will likely flood the country with even more Syrian refugees (in addition to Somalis and other Islamic refugees) for the first few months of fiscal year 2017. He will take the appropriated funds and front load refugee resettlement at the beginning of the year so that the next president won’t be able to turn back the clock. This is why Congress must act immediately to cut off funding or place a moratorium on refugee resettlement. Paul Ryan already failed the party and the country last year when he passed a spending bill which contained $1.67 billion for refugee resettlement, enough funding to cover Obama’s increased refugee resettlement goal for FY 2016. Of course, that funding did not include a single policy rider limiting certain refugees. Now is Ryan’s last chance to stand for America’s security and demonstrate that he is at least marginally better than John Boehner.
