Vote Alert: Strong Missile Defense

The Rehberg amendment would have prohibited the Obama administration from unilaterally reducing our nation's strategic nuclear triad and missile defense. Conservatives opposed the new START treaty because there was not enough accountability to ensure that Russia would comply with the nuclear reduction agreement. The lack of accountability would have resulted in unilateral disarmament for the United States. Although the House doesn’t vote on ratification of treaties, this amendment would have forced the Obama administration to uphold promises they made to Congress regarding the treaty. The amendment was rejected in the House on May 18, 2012 in a roll call vote of 238-162.
