White House meeting with key senators behind potential gun control legislation: Report
August 14, 2019
The following is an excerpt from Blaze Media’s daily Capitol Hill Brief email newsletter:
While the news cycle has momentarily turned its focus back to the case of Jeffrey Epstein, with a quick sidebar concerning whether or not “Fredo” is actually a slur against Italian-Americans, the wheels of gun control are still slowly and quietly turning in Washington, according to reports.
Last week, President Trump discussed the possibility of bringing up “background checks like we’ve never had before” when asked about potential gun control responses to recent shootings.
This week, it’s been reported that Ivanka Trump has quietly been calling lawmakers in order to take Congress’ temperature on gun legislation in anticipation of legislators’ return next month.
Politico also details that the White House has been meeting with the staff of key senators behind potential gun control bills: Pat Toomey, R-Penn.; Joe Manchin, D-W.V.; and Chris Murphy, D-Conn.
