Who will take Mark Meadows' seat in Congress?

The following is an excerpt from Blaze Media’s Capitol Hill Brief email newsletter:

Now that Mark Meadows has announced that he won’t be running for re-election — with speculation swirling that he may be the next White House chief of staff — the race to fill his open western North Carolina congressional seat is on.

The Republican primary for the district has already drawn a considerable number of contenders. Among those vying to fill the shoes of the former House Freedom Caucus chairman are state Senator Jim Davis, Haywood County GOP Vice Chair Lynda Bennett, and Meadows’ own deputy chief of staff, Wayne King. Several other Republican candidates also threw their hats in on Friday, bringing the total number to 11.

The district still leans substantially Republican despite the state’s new court-ordered electoral map, so the real contest will be in the GOP primary, which is scheduled for March 3.
