WTF MSM!? ‘Collusion’ drove a year of #FakeNews

Russia, Russia, Russia …

A dominant story … The folks at Echelon Insights put together a great graphical representation of what the top news stories were this year, based on the stories’ share of the social media conversation. How much of that conversation was about the “Russian collusion” story over the year, week-by-week? Unsurprisingly it was the most talked about news story, because it was pushed over and over again. There were over 180 million mentions of the story on Twitter over the course of the year.

Preparing the base … NBC News seems to be prepping liberals for the very real possibility that nothing will come of the investigation, without admitting that there’s nothing there. Our friends at NewsBusters highlighted a recent NBC News column that states that Trump will never be charged with collusion, because it “is only a federal crime in the area of antitrust law.” This is the point that LevinTV host Mark Levin, Professor Alan Dershowitz, and others have been making all year. The prosecution of Trump is a high bar that will be tough to overcome, and there is no evidence that special counsel Mueller is making any progress toward clearing it.

Trump has a point? … Yesterday morning, CNN legal analyst Paul Callan dropped a bombshell — well, to CNN viewers anyway — on the air. Callan said, “Originally, I was angered at the president's attacks on the FBI. I thought they were unjustified, but when I started to delve into the facts, boy, there's some really disturbing stuff here.” You don’t say, Paul? For the past two months, CNN media critic/cheerleader Brian Stelter has been telling CNN viewers that Trump and Fox News’ attacks on the FBI and DOJ are unhinged and a threat to the rule of law. Is the network changing course? Doubtful, but we’ll be watching to see if it does.

Looking back …

Top stories of the year … Earlier this week, I took the time to chat with my friend Joe Battenfeld on Boston Herald Radio. The topic was the year’s top stories and which stories were underreported. Take a listen to the podcast of the show when you get a chance, and tell me what you think.

Outrageous … Over at NewsBusters, Geoffrey Dickens has come up with the most outrageous media quotes of 2017. Today Dickens took a look at the stupidest quotes from the media over the past year. Earlier in the week, he took a look at the outrageousness of: journalists fawning over liberals, nasty attacks on Republicans and conservatives, and freak-outs over President Donald Trump. I had forgotten just how outrageous some of this stuff truly was.

Overwhelmingly negative … The Pew Research Center took a look at the coverage of Donald Trump vs. President Obama in their respective first years of office. The findings? According to the Washington Examiner’s Paul Bedard, the media for Trump was “three times more negative than for Obama.” That’s not surprising to those of us who have been paying attention. The hyper-partisan negative focus has done lasting damage to the credibility of news outlets. It is going to take significant work to regain the trust of a large portion of the American people.

Tell a friend …

I can’t fight back alone against the mainstream media. I need your help. There are two ways you can help. First, send your friends – and even your enemies – over to the WTF MSM!? email signup page. Second, email me at reno@conservativereview.com with anything questionable you see the media do. Together, we can fight back.
