Colorado secretary of state and other leftists are glum over SCOTUS ballot decision: 'It will be up to the American voters'

President Joe Biden's top political rival will appear on the ballot in the Centennial State, to the chagrin of Democrats and other leftists who routinely express concerns about threats to democracy.

The Democrat-appointed justices on the Colorado Supreme Court ruled in December that former President Donald Trump could not appear on the ballot in the state. The U.S. Supreme Court unanimously reversed that decision Monday, underscoring that Congress, not the states, is "responsible for enforcing Section 3 [of the 14th Amendment] against federal officeholders and candidates."

Colorado Secretary of State Jena Griswold made her disappointment known in liberal circles while her defeated equivalent in Maine walked back a similar effort to disenfranchise voters.

Griswold, a Democrat, told Scripps News last year that she believed the Colorado "court's decision was right."

"I believe that Jan. 6 was an insurrection, and I'll go even further in saying that Trump incited it," said Griswold. "So the wording of Section 3 of the 14th Amendment is clear: It says that any person that swears to uphold the Constitution, and then engages in insurrection or rebellion, subsequently cannot hold office."

After her understanding of the Constitution was found wanting by the U.S. Supreme Court Monday, Griswold told Politico, "It's concerning that federal candidates, at this point, can engage in insurrection and then face no accountability for ballot access."

"This decision did not surprise me, given the oral arguments," said Griswold. "I'm disappointed; I think states under federalism should be able to enforce the clear words [of Section 3]."

Griswold added that "it's up to the American people to save democracy in November," echoing Biden's go-to insinuation that democracy is reliant upon the empowerment of a single political party.

The Colorado secretary recycled these remarks on MSNBC, again underscoring her disappointment over the high court's ruling in Anderson v. Griswold ruling. However, Griswold went on to denigrate the one political body constitutionally permitted to take that action she previously figured executable by a partisan state court.

"Ultimately this decision ... leaves open the door for Congress to act, to pass authorizing legislation," said Griswold. "But we know that Congress is a nearly non-functioning body."

Since neither Democrat-appointed justices in Colorado nor lawmakers in the nation's capital will be able to prevent voters from casting ballots for Trump, Griswold reiterated that the fate of the nation "will be up to the American voters."

Democrat Colorado Secretary of State Jena Griswold says her reaction to the Supreme Court's unanimous decision is "disappointment."\n\n"It will be up to the American voters to save our democracy in November."
— (@)

Griswold was evidently not the only liberal upset over the high court's ruling.

Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington, the liberal activist group that represented the petitioners in the Colorado case, similarly did not take the loss well.

CREW president Noah Bookbinder, up until recently a member of the Biden Department of Homeland Security's Homeland Security Advisory Council, said, "The Supreme Court removed an enforcement mechanism, and in letting Trump back on the ballot, they failed to meet the moment."

Like Griswold, Bookbinder suggested it is once again "up to the American people to ensure accountability."

While Bookbinder stressed that "this was in no way a win for Trump," he will be on the ballots today in two other states that disqualified the Republican front-runner.

Maine Democratic Secretary of State Shenna Bellows issued a modified ruling Monday walking back her Dec. 28 disqualification of Trump, wherein she stressed, "Democracy is sacred."

"I have reviewed the Anderson decision carefully. The U.S. Supreme Court has ruled that individual states lack authority to enforce Section Three of the Fourteenth Amendment with respect to federal offices," wrote Bellows. "Consistent with my oath and obligation to follow the law and the Constitution, and pursuant to the Anderson decision, I hereby withdraw my determination that Mr. Trump's primary petition is invalid."

Votes cast for Trump in Tuesday's primary will, as a result, be counted.

It's also game over for the Section 3-based disqualification in Illinois, where a Democratic judge heavily based her removal ruling on the Colorado Supreme Court's arguments.Consequently, Trump will be on the primary ballot on March 19 in the Prairie State.

Free Speech for People, the leftist advocacy group that represented the five men who petitioned to have Trump removed from the ballot in Illinois, said in a statement following the Anderson ruling, "The U.S. Supreme Court today has made a mockery of Section 3 of the Fourteenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution."

The group suggested further that the ruling was "dangerous."

"This decision is disgraceful," said Rob Fein, the legal director of the leftist outfit. "The Supreme Court couldn't exonerate Trump because the evidence of his guilt was overwhelming, so instead the Justices neutered our Constitution’s built-in defense against insurrectionists and said the facts don't matter."

CNN medical expert gets abruptly fact-checked after claiming 'the science has changed' on mask mandates: 'The polls changed'

CNN medical expert and former Planned Parenthood president Dr. Leana Wen incited mockery on social media after she claimed Monday that mask mandates are no longer necessary because "the science has changed."

Wen's comments came after New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy (D) and Delaware Gov. John Carney (D) announced that mask mandates for schools in each state would soon end.

What did Wen say?

Speaking on CNN, Wen explained that she agreed with New Jersey's and Delaware's decisions because, in part, "the science has changed."

"There was, and is, a time and place for pandemic restrictions. But when they were put in, it was always with the understanding that they would be removed as soon as we can," Wen said. "And, in this case, circumstances have changed — case counts are declining. Also, the science has changed."

Wen, however, did not address what "science" has changed, or what "science" once showed that mask mandates in schools were absolutely necessary.

— Anderson Cooper 360\u00b0 (@Anderson Cooper 360\u00b0) 1644284640

Perhaps most ironic about Wen's interview is that she said the conversation about face masks must now shift from government mandates to "individual responsibility."

"In this case, I'm not saying — I don’t think anyone, really, is saying — that no one should ever wear masks. But rather that the responsibility should shift from a government mandate imposed from the state or the local district of the school ... it should shift to an individual responsibility by the family, who can still decide that their child can wear a mask if needed."

The admission comes just weeks after Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin (R) empowered parents to do exactly what Wen suggested by signing an executive order moving the power to determine masking from school officials to individual parents.

Democrats grumbled over Youngkin's order, and White House press secretary Jen Psaki as recently as Monday complained about it — all while praising Murphy's decision.

What was the reaction to Wen?

Wen's comments triggered a tsunami of reaction online, the consensus of which went something like this: "science" has not changed — only Democrats' political standing has changed.

  • "The polling numbers have changed. The political landscape has changed. That's why you're promoting a different propaganda message now. That's all.If the science itself had changed, we'd see new peer-reviewed studies that indicate the change," psychology professor Geoffrey Miller said.
  • "As others noted, there is nothing in The Science™ that changed to justify Dem politicians suddenly ending mask mandates. All that changed is the political fear they have.Conflating 'The Science' with politics like this is a key reason many lost trust in public health experts," Glenn Greenwald observed.
  • "Has anything fundamentally changed in the last six months, except for Democrats finally, belatedly realizing that militant masking is a political loser? The science didn’t change, the politics changed," Reason editor Robby Soave said.
  • "The science didn’t change, the polls changed," entrepreneur David Sacks reacted.
  • "'The science' is the method, not the data. 'The science has changed' is something you say when you’re unscientific but want to sound to lay people like you are," Noam Blum pointed out.
  • "The ‘science’ hasn’t changed. The wind has… And they see which way it’s blowing," actor Rob Schneider said.
  • "Weird. 'I trust the science' has been the go-to moral response to questioning CDC policy. Now we’re told the science can change. Are we still not allowed to question CDC policy?" commentator Becket Adams questioned.
  • "No, the science didn't change. Politics and agendas did. Corona restrictions like lockdowns, mask mandates, and antisocial distancing are cut from the cloth of pseudoscience. It's what happens when you allow hypochondriacs to drive public policy," another person pointed out.
  • "What happened to Leana’s original ‘The science is settled’ argument? History will not be kind to people like her," one person said.
  • "This is gaslighting. She is brazenly lying, her statements flying in the face of all evidence, most of which has been there for more than 2 years. This is what happens when sociopaths get caught--they double down on their lies. They never stop lying," author Tucker Max observed.

Right on cue, Rep. Sean Patrick Maloney, chairman of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, said Tuesday that Democrats need to begin communicating "a clear off-ramp" on the pandemic.

CNN medical expert now says we can relax mandates — and her reasoning is MADDENING

According to CNN’s medical expert Dr. Leana Wen, we can all relax a bit when it comes to draconian COVID restrictions because, you know, "the science has changed."

CNN's Anderson Cooper shared a video clip on Twitter Monday night, in which Wen argued in favor of lifting some pandemic restrictions and shifting the decision to wear masks from government mandates to individual choice.

"Circumstances have changed. Case counts are declining. Also, the science has changed," Wen said.

Wait, what happened to "don't question the science"? Will Wen or CNN get fact-checked by the social media overlords? And isn't it interesting that, as Democrats quake in the path of oncoming midterm elections, the narrative has conveniently shifted — and all on the same day?

As always, Twitter can be counted on to weigh in:

'F*** Joe Biden': College football fans express displeasure with the Biden administration

In this clip, Steven Crowder highlighted a new trend happening at college football games in the south and greater southeast region of the United States.

Over the weekend, Auburn was one of multiple college football games where fans could be heard chanting "F*** Joe Biden".

"It's almost like a movement," Crowder observed, noting that it was like "planking" or the "ice bucket challenge."

Post-debate media roundup: Poor boys, Abraham Lincoln and Hunter Biden

The final debate before the 2020 presidential election saw the two candidates punching hard at each other, but neither struck a knockout blow. Most commentators thought NBC News moderator Kristen Welker did a much better job and the muting of microphones seemed to aid in keeping the discussion civil and more intelligible.

Here are some of the more interesting reactions to the debate from social media.

Many people were glad that Hunter Biden was made an issue:

Biden sarcastically referred to the president as Abraham Lincoln and he didn't quite get it:

Thanks to this exchange, Abraham Lincoln was trending on Twitter briefly. But unfortunately for Biden, Twitter noticed he mistook the "poor boys" for what he meant, which was "Proud Boys," a far-right organization:
