Bearded women cause uproar in Spanish women's soccer league as politicians demand answers

Two women with masculine facial hair have sparked controversy in a Spanish women's soccer league as their team claims they are facing "violence" and "fascism."

Alex Alcaide Llanos and Nil Alcon Labella play for Club Esportiu Europa B, a women's team in Barcelona. The duo have been reported as biological women by multiple outlets, including the Daily Mail, which noted that the women are in the middle of gender transitions and are still ineligible for men's soccer.

'It was clear from an early age that I wanted to be a boy.'

You can view images of the players in question — Alex and Nil — on the team's website. Both sport fully grown facial hair, likely from testosterone treatments.

Alex can be seen in a 2022 Beteve article without any facial hair.

The women's facial hair appears to have caused confusion, specifically following a recent 3-1 win over Terrassa.

After the game, Alicia Tomas — a councilor from the conservative Vox party — called the players "two guys with beards who consider themselves women."

"It is as unfair for men who perceive themselves as women to participate in a women's competition as it is for women who are undergoing male hormone therapy to participate," Tomas reportedly said. "They want to erase us from public spaces, from sports and from all areas."

The politician later asserted that institutions are carrying out "violence against women."

Tomas also said, "A man who perceives himself as a woman cannot play in a women's category. A woman up on testosterone and male hormones (doped) cannot play in a women's category. Only sexists can defend this encroachment on our rights."

Alex reportedly said, "As long as my ID card still has the F for female, I'm playing in the category that corresponds to me."

Alex went on that "it was clear from an early age that I wanted to be a boy, and that I wanted to be called Alex."

The striker then claimed, "I started the transition of my body early, it hasn't changed that much, I've always had this male body and hormones help me to build muscle sooner, not to build more muscle. The moment I feel superior, with advantages, I'll quit, I'll step aside."

CE Europa responded to the political backlash by saying it stands for values of "sportsmanship," "fair play," and "compliance with current sports regulation."

As reported by Marca, the team also likened criticisms to violence and fascism and said it fights for the right of people to live lives "free from all kinds of violence."

"Combating hate crimes and transferable violence is a collective duty that challenges us throughout society," the team reportedly added. "Therefore, we reiterate and say very loudly that we remain firm. Against aggression and fascism, we say 'not a step back.'"

Councilor Tomas responded by accusing the team of inflicting violence against women.

At the same time, despite both players being born women, playing on a women's team, and having identification that labels them as female, CE Europa still chooses to refer to them as males.

"Alex is developing as a player, he has obvious technical shortcomings, he is a fast player, but we have four or five more like him. He is not the fastest," team coordinator Nany Haces said in 2022.

Luxury watch company crafts blistering rebuke of transgender movement’s ‘assault on womanhood’

Florida-based watch manufacturer Egard Watches — which has spoken up in defense of police officers in past advertisements — has created an ad spot in defense of biological women’s rights.

What are the details?

The video opens with footage of accomplished women, including female athletes and others, and shows women through the decades and even centuries fighting for equal rights.

"What is a woman?" the female narrator says. "Is women's history of achievements quickly being erased? Is a woman a feminine force of nature? Is a woman a sister, a daughter, a mother? Is a woman the wonder of childbirth?"

"Is a woman a caregiver?" the narrator continues. "Is a woman a warrior who fought for her place?"

The video continues, "Is that now being taken away, soon to be forgotten? Is that not worth protecting? And how long do we sit idly by and not stand for the sacred value of womanhood as it loses all meaning?"

"Because we believe that womanhood is a birthright," the narrator concludes.

What else?

In a statement provided to Blaze Media, Egard CEO Ilan Srulovicz said, “The overwhelming majority of Americans are appalled by Big Tech, Big Business, and Big Government’s coordinated campaign to erase the hard-fought gains earned by untold millions of amazing women in our society."

"Yet, almost nobody is speaking for them," Srulovicz continued. "We crafted an ad campaign that celebrates our grandmothers, mothers, sisters, aunts, and daughters, and everything they represent to paint a stark contrast to the lies we are all being told."

Srulovicz added, "The push for transgender rights is no longer about equality, it’s now a cleverly-crafted lie that comes at the expense of women. We ask all Americans to join us to speak truth.”

Transgender advocates annoyed as trailer hits for series about plague that kills every mammal with Y chromosome — except one man

The first trailer was released this week for a TV adaptation of a popular comic book series titled, "Y: The Last Man" — and it's raising the ire of transgender advocates.

Why?

As you might already be able to tell, the series title itself might be cause for anger with the transgender community — but it's even deeper than that.

The premise is that a plague kills every mammal on Earth with a Y chromosome, Rolling Stone reported.

That is, except for one human named Yorick and his pet monkey Ampersand, the magazine added.

And the only others left are the non-Y folk:

Getting the picture, now?

In other words, what about transgender men — i.e., biological women who identify as men and would have survived the plague?

And perhaps more importantly to trans peeps and their allies: What about transgender women — i.e., biological men who identify as women, and whose rallying cry has always been "transgender women are women!" even though they wouldn't have survived the plague?

Trans male character reportedly written in

Slash Film reported back in 2019 that there was a casting call for a transgender male character for the screen adaptation of "Y: The Last Man," even though there were no transgender characters in the comic book series that ran from 2002 to 2008 — several years before transgender issues became a cultural touchstone.

Slash Film said it reached out to FX — which is taking on the series — for comment on the reported transgender male character but didn't receive a response.

But what about transgender women?

Even if there is a transgender male character in the series, it would seem "Y: The Last Man" still might face a problem with the trans community as there's no way transgender women could survive since they have Y chromosomes.

How are folks reacting?

As you might guess, a number of Twitter users are sounding off about the issue:

  • "Wait isn't the specific premise of Y THE LAST MAN that the man-killing virus is actually one that targets people with Y chromosomes?" one commenter wondered. "If that's the case then they're not allowed to say 'a world without cisgender men' unless they also say 'or trans women.' I demand honesty."
  • "Maybe a better title would be 'Y: the last man except for all the trans men who are doing just fine thank you very much, so maybe the last cis man but genetics are complicated,'" another user quipped.
  • "I've heard they at one point had a transgender man in the cast (as trans men survive because they don't have a Y chromosome)," one commenter said. "But like….. still called 'The Last Man,' and you are basically saying trans men aren't men."
  • "Y The Last Man is extremely dated and brings up a lot of uncomfortable questions about trans people that cannot be answered in a short form piece of fiction that isn't specifically about answering those questions," another user wrote. "It's going to be a mess."

Here's the trailer for the series, which premieres Sept. 13 and will stream on FX on Hulu:
