After Propping Up Biden’s Staged Border Visit, NPR Frames McCarthy’s Trip As A ‘Photo Op’

After propping up Biden's staged border visit, NPR is now framing Speaker Kevin McCarthy's border trip as a 'photo op.'

'I'm not finished': Kamala Harris annoyed by more border-visit questions, scolds Univision anchor with upturned finger, smile, and that familiar giggle

Vice President Kamala Harris turned in yet another awkward interview performance Thursday as Univision anchor Ilia Calderón pressed her on what's become the eternal question: When will she finally go to the border to witness the migrant crisis in person?

What happened?

"I've said I'm gonna go to the border," a clearly flustered Harris told Calderón. "And I—"

With that, a stern-faced Calderón interrupted Harris and sank her teeth in: "When are you going to the border, Vice President?"

There was a pause in the exchange, presumably due to a satellite delay — and then Harris wasted no time displaying her mood.

Briefly closing her eyes as if she couldn't believe someone beneath her had the nerve to issue a challenging question, the vice president showed the whole world how annoyed she was.

'I'm not finished'

"I'm not finished," Harris answered with an upturned finger before putting on a smile and letting loose with her signature giggle.

It was reminiscent of the viral moment during her debate last fall with then-Vice President Mike Pence, who also managed to annoy Harris with an interjecting comment as she began to talk. And a condescending Harris practically patted Pence on the head: "Mr. Vice President, I'm speaking. I'm speaking, 'k?"

In the case of her interview with Calderón, the mood remained tense.

"I've said I'm going to the border. And also if we are going to deal with the problems at the border, we have to deal with the problems that cause people to go to the border, to flee to the border. And that is the root causes," Harris said. "So my first trip as vice president of the United States was to go — in terms of a foreign trip — to Guatemala, to be on the ground there to address and to be informed of the root causes: 'Why are the people of Guatemala leaving?'"

"Do you have a date for your trip to the border?" Calderón asked.

"I will keep you posted," Harris replied.

Harris made headlines earlier this week when she gave a cringeworthy answer to NBC News' Lester Holt regarding when or if she'll go to the border — you know, given that's the job President Joe Biden gave her.

"And I haven't been to Europe!" Harris replied with that laugh of hers. "And I mean — I don't understand the point that you're making."

The White House wasn't amused, however, and it was reported that "some administration officials" were "quietly perplexed about what they perceive as her bumpy answers to questions about whether she will go to the US-Mexico border."

Trump says he will go to the border, hammers Biden admin for migrant crisis: 'They don't know what they're doing'

Former President Donald Trump has been banned or suspended from every major social media platform, but there are reports that he may create his network in the near future. Trump has appeared on Fox News three times in the past week, where much of his indignation has been aimed at President Joe Biden and the current border crisis.

Trump appeared on Fox News' "Justice with Judge Jeanine" on Saturday night, where the former president berated his successor over the dismantling of his immigration policies.

"Thousands and thousands of people are coming up right now as we speak," Trump stated. "And you're going to have millions of people pouring into our country. And it's going to destroy our country."

"The U.S. Border Patrol has encountered an average of 5,000 undocumented immigrants per day over the past 30 days, according to a senior Border Patrol," NBC News reported, which is on pace to break the record for border crossings.

"You have to see the squalor, the children and, frankly, people that have come in to the country when you look at what's happening, the dirt and the filth of those places," Trump said. "That's why they're not letting the press in."

There is already a record-high number of unaccompanied migrant children in Border Patrol custody. As of Wednesday, there were more than 16,500 unaccompanied migrant children in federal custody, according to CBS News. Photos of the migrant facility in Donna, Texas, shows children packed into tight quarters, which one Democratic lawmaker described as "terrible conditions for the children."

"The wall is just a few weeks away from being completed. [Biden] didn't want to complete it," Trump told host Jeanine Pirro. "They should finish the wall, number one. And they should have the [Remain in Mexico] policy reinserted, because if you don't have that, this is going to be a disaster...The wall should be completed by now if he let -- he stopped it almost at his first day. He stopped construction of the wall."

The Biden administration ended the Migrant Protection Protocols, which Trump enacted in January 2019. The MPP, which is also known as the "Remain in Mexico" policy, made asylum-seekers wait in Mexico during the duration of their immigration court cases.

Data from the Department of Homeland Security in 2019 found that the Remain in Mexico policy was effective in curbing the surge of illegal immigrants. The DHS assessment described the policy as an "indispensable tool in addressing the ongoing crisis at the southern border and restoring integrity to the immigration system." Former Customs and Border Protection Commissioner Mark Morgan has described MPP as a "game changer."

Trump called Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador a "great president," who supplied "soldiers on our border, 28,000 soldiers stopped people from coming in."

Last week, the president of Mexico placed blame on the Biden administration for the border crisis by saying, "Expectations were created that with the government of President Biden, there would be a better treatment of migrants. And this has caused Central American migrants, and also from our country, wanting to cross the border thinking that it is easier to do so."

Trump then said that he would visit the U.S. southern border.

"I don't know what they're doing. And they don't know what they're doing," Trump said of the Biden administration. "It's a very, very dangerous situation. I'd love not to be involved. Somebody else is supposed to be doing it."

"Over the next few weeks, I guess I'll go [to the border]," the former president proclaimed. "And I'm not sure that I really should do it, Jeanine, other than the fact that I have such respect for the Border Patrol and for ICE. And these people they're dying for leadership. There's nothing. There's no leadership."

"The Border Patrol and all of the people of ICE [Immigration and Customs Enforcement], they want me to go," he said. "I really feel I sort of owe it to them, they're great people."

When Pirro asked Trump when he would visit the conditions at the border, he replied, "Over the next couple of weeks. Border Patrol wants me to go— probably over the next couple of weeks. I don't think there's a rush for me to go."

Trump then took a shot at Biden for not visiting the situation at the border, "He's supposed to go and make the decisions."

Last Sunday, Biden told reporters that he would visit the border "at some point."

Last week, Trump hammered the media for lobbing "softball" questions to Biden during his first presidential press conference.

"It was like softballs, like you're throwing softballs up. And it's just a different world, nobody's seen anything like it," Trump told Fox News host Laura Ingraham on Thursday. "It's very sad to watch, actually. They're feeding him questions, they're easy questions."
