Video shows deputy narrowly dodge death by dropping under suspect's crashing car: 'Talk about nine lives'

A Dorchester County sheriff's officer had a close shave last month when a crashing car, the driver of which was allegedly set on his demise, rolled right over him.

Sgt. Lawrence Hill was looking to stop a suspect who had been speeding perilously through Summerville, South Carolina, on Sept. 19, reported the Post and Courier.

The suspect in question, 54-year-old Roger Quentin Hill — who is not related to the sergeant — led deputies on a chase through the county, allegedly hitting speeds of up to 100 mph, according to an incident report.

Robert Quentin Hill - Dorchester County Jail

An officer initially tried to stop the suspect west of Summerville after noticing an expired registration sticker, but Quentin Hill allegedly refused to stop.

WCSC-TV reported that the suspect unsuccessfully attempted to hit the officer, then began weaving through traffic and forcing other cars off the road. Fifteen minutes later, after reportedly realizing he couldn't escape the neighborhood, Quentin Hill encountered Sgt. Hill off Scotch Orange Road.

In footage captured by another deputy's dashboard camera, Sgt. Hill's cruiser can be seen parked off to the side of the road. In the ditch on the opposite side, Hill waits with a spike strip ready. As the suspect's Jaguar sedan's closes in, Sgt. Hill throws the spikes. However, the driver veers off the road toward the deputy.

Sgt. Hill vanishes under the sedan as it catches a piece of a utility pole at the last moment, toppling it and yanking down live wires. The sedan then rolls right over the deputy, throwing shrapnel and dust into the air.

As the deputy whose cruiser captured the footage rushes to the scene of the smoking wreck, Sgt. Hill can be seen standing and walking away from the wake of destruction.

One officer rushes the suspect's vehicle with his gun drawn, ordering Quentin Hill to put his hands up.

The Post and Courier indicated that Sgt. Hill was taken to hospital with bruises and an injured shoulder.

"He's lucky to be alive," said Lt. Rick Carson. "Talk about nine lives."

Quentin Hill was charged with attempted murder, failure to stop for blue lights, destruction of an electric pole, and driving with a suspended license. He was denied bond on account of the attempted murder charge.

Alarming dashcam video shows California woman barely escaping Oakland carjacking: 'You've got to have a plan'

Frightening dashcam video shows the moment a California woman barely escaped a carjacking attempt in Oakland.

Around 8:30 a.m. on July 21, a woman was driving on Skyline Boulevard behind a white Dodge Charger. Suddenly, the driver of the Charger quickly turned the wheel and angled the car to block the road.

The driver – dressed completely in black – exited the vehicle and pointed a gun at the woman. The passenger – also dressed head to toe in black – dashed out of the car and advanced to the woman's vehicle to try to open the passenger door.

The woman – who wished to remain anonymous – told KTVU, "I punched it, I went around their car, and I drove away as fast as I could trying to get someplace safe."

The alarming dashcam footage shows the suspects running back to their car and pursuing the woman.

"I had the horn going, and I was driving fast and hard, and I wouldn't let them get up next to me," the victim said, adding that the car chase was "scary."

The woman was able to evade the Charger, and the suspects stopped chasing her SUV.

On Thursday, the Oakland Police Department announced that two men and one juvenile were arrested in connection with the attempted carjacking caught on a dash camera. They are also suspects in several carjackings throughout the city.

The trio tried to flee from police during the arrest, but were eventually caught by authorities.

Police did not identify the suspects.

Two days after the attempted carjacking, there was another harrowing encounter on the same road. Around 9 p.m., a car rammed another vehicle on Skyline Boulevard – forcing the driver to stop the car. Four people exited the aggressive vehicle and dragged the driver out of the car. The thieves stole the car and the belongings inside, according to KNTV.

KPIX-TV reported earlier this week that Oakland has had 369 carjackings so far this year, up 24% from two years ago, according to the Oakland Police.

In April, the Oakland Police Department issued an advisory about the increase in armed robberies and dangerous carjackings.

The crimes are happening across Oakland at various hours. In some recent cases, armed individuals intentionally collide their vehicles with the vehicles of unexpected victims in hopes of getting the victim to stop. In other incidents, the armed individuals block the victim's vehicle to prevent them from leaving. The armed individuals then rob the victims of their personal property. In some cases, the victims have also been carjacked.

The Oakland Police Department recommends motorists:

  • Always keep your vehicle's doors locked and windows rolled up when driving, especially in high-risk areas.
  • If you are involved in a vehicle collision and believe you are in danger, call the police immediately.
  • If you are being followed or believe you are in danger, drive to the police station, or a well-lit and populated area, and call the police.
  • Do not be distracted by electronic devices.
  • Be discreet with your property; this includes purses, phones, jewelry, and other valuables.

The woman advised other drivers, "You've got to have a plan. You've got to be aware. You know, you can't just 'la la la' down the road any more."

She said, "Very fortunate. Very fortunate no guns were fired. No cars were crashed. No people were in the streets. I feel very fortunate."

Video: Suspected human smuggler arrested after high-speed, wrong-way chase on interstate; 12 migrants apprehended

Video: Suspected human smuggler arrested after high-speed, wrong-way chase on interstate; 12 migrants apprehended

A suspected human smuggler who led authorities in a high-speed chase in a truck barreling down the interstate in the wrong direction has been arrested, authorities say.

Eduardo Aradas of Florida faces state criminal charges for smuggling and evading, Lt. Chris Olivarez, Texas Department of Public Safety, South Texas Region spokesperson, said in a statement on Twitter.
"I've got a truck tractor going northbound in the southbound lane on 35," a trooper is heard saying in a video of the chase, which went on for "several miles."
A dozen migrants he was allegedly transporting were apprehended and referred to U.S. Border Patrol.
Video of the harrowing chase captured on an officer's dash camera accompanied Lt. Olivarez's tweet.
Texas DPS pursued the truck after the driver refused to stop for a traffic violation, Olivarez explained.
The driver reached speeds up to 85 mph while driving on the wrong side of Interstate 35 in La Salle County, Texas.
The driver eventually veered onto the shoulder and pulled off the highway into the brush, where he got stuck. The video shows the driver and a dozen migrants bailing out of the big rig and uniformed officers rounding them up.
One officer is heard asking Aradas, who was covered with dust and straw-like vegetation, where he was heading.
"San Antonio," Aradas is heard saying.
Olivarez appended the hashtag #OperationLoneStar to his tweet about the chase and the apprehension.
Texas Governor Greg Abbott (R) launched Operation Lone Star in March 2021 to repond to a rise in illegal immigration. He issued a disaster declaration in May that now covers 48 counties, mostly along or near the southern border.
"The declaration directed the Department of Public Safety to 'use available resources to enforce all applicable federal and state laws to prevent the criminal activity along the border, including criminal trespassing, smuggling, and human trafficking, and to assist Texas counties in their efforts to address those criminal activities.'"
Lt. Olivarez reported Monday that in the previous 48 hours, Texas DPS' Tactical Marine Unit had recovered four deceased bodies from the Rio Grande River in Eagle Pass, Texas. One of the bodies was that of an infant.

Insane video: NYC car chase escalates into demolition derby, ends in broad daylight gunpoint robbery

A viral video captured the moment of a crazy car chase in New York City on Saturday afternoon. The car chase escalated into a fender-bending demolition derby on a street on the Upper East Side. The insane situation ends with a gunpoint robbery in broad daylight.

A silver Toyota RAV4 is seen on video speeding away from a black Mercedes Benz around 4:40 p.m. on Saturday. The Mercedes races to the driver's side of the SUV despite an oncoming car driving down the street.

The Mercedes rams the driver's side of the RAV4 – which caused the SUV to lose control and slam into another car. The vehicles then burn rubber and continue the car chase down a sidewalk as pedestrians scramble to avoid being run over.

The Mercedes rams the RAV4 yet again – this time on the passenger's side. The RAV4 spins 180 degrees because of the car crash.

A man gets out of the Mercedes and begins using a gun to smash a window on the SUV.

A witness is heard on video screaming, "He's got a gun! He's got a gun!"

The gunman then runs to the driver's side and commits a gunpoint robbery. In the video, the armed man is seen running back to the Mercedes with a black bag. The Mercedes races off and the video ends.

"The guy was in shock he cannot say nothing," a witness told the New York Daily News. "He just standing in his place. At first when he see the gun… He get out and he put his hands up."

The New York Daily News reported that the car crash that ended in an armed robbery took place on Second Avenue, only a few blocks from Gracie Mansion – the official residence of the Mayor of New York City Eric Adams.

Police said the RAV4 driver is a 55-year-old man.

The Mercedes was reportedly found on E. 86th St. near Third Ave. A witness said three men fled from a black Mercedes Benz and sprinted to the Second Ave subway station.

Another witness said, "When we were in the store and saw there were guns involved, I told everyone to go to the back of the store. It all happened so quickly – maybe it took three minutes at most."

The New York Police Department (NYPD) is investigating the apparent crime.

According to NYPD crime statistics, robberies are up nearly 40% over the past year in New York City and grand larceny has spiked by 46%.

\u201cThis WILD robbery happened in NYC today apparently. Thank you @GovKathyHochul for making sure only the bad guys are armed and feel free to terrorize law abiding citizens\nhttps://t.co/nSsYLERqyX\u201d

Man drives through protest in a Prius, gets chased down by cars and attacked by protesters

There were protests in Los Angeles on Thursday night following the grand jury's decision not to indict police officers on homicide charges in the fatal shooting of Breonna Taylor in Louisville, Kentucky. Hundreds of protesters demonstrated in the streets of the Hollywood neighborhood in California, where a wild car chase broke out after a driver attempted to drive through a crowd of people.

Videos on social media show a white Toyota Prius slowly turn down a street at around 9 p.m., despite the intersection being blocked by protesters.

"It wasn't traveling at a fast speed — it was inching forward, trying to get past, and that upset people," Christian Monterrosa, a freelance photojournalist who was covering the protest, told the Los Angeles Times.

Demonstrators punch and kick the car as it weaves through the crowd. After the car makes the turn, the protesters pursue the Prius.

A black pickup truck that was involved with the Breonna Taylor protest chased after the Prius. Video taken by KCAL-TV's helicopter shows the truck accelerating to get in front of the Prius and then stopping in the middle of the road to prevent the Prius from escaping.

The driver of the pickup gets out and attempts to remove the driver from the Prius. Meanwhile, a green Ford Mustang comes up from the rear to try to box in the Prius. The Prius slams into the Mustang.

People gather around the Prius and attempt to open the doors of the car. They attack the vehicle with metal rods, skateboards, and a pole for a "Black Lives Matter" flag, and one person throws a bicycle at the car's rear window.

The Prius then drives away, but it was detained by police a few blocks away.

The LAPD released a statement regarding the Prius incident as well as an earlier situation where a truck hit a protester, causing injury.

"A black pickup truck leading the protests accelerated and pinned that white Prius in, forcing it to come to a stop," the LAPD said in a statement. "The driver of the Prius attempted to flee the area and reversed into a green Mustang behind it. That vehicle was also participating in the protest."

"Both the drivers of the pick-up truck and the green Mustang attempted to extract the driver of the Prius from his vehicle," LAPD said. "However, that driver was able to get away from the scene."

The police said that there were no injuries from the Prius incident. LAPD added, "All of the drivers involved in both altercations have been identified by Hollywood Officers and the investigation is continuing."

A police official gave an update on the Prius situation to KNBC reporter Robert Kovacik.

"The white Prius, similarly, was attacked by several protesters who pried his door open and punched him several times while he was inside of his Prius," the officer said. "He stepped on the gas to try to escape from that attack and may or may not have struck one of the protesters, we have not located a victim yet of that crime if there was one."

The Hollywood Police Department estimates that 350 participated in the protest. Capt. Steve Lurie, who leads the Los Angeles Police Department's Hollywood Division, said that 20 protesters were "violent."

On Friday morning, "Reginald Denny" was a trending topic on Twitter because of the incident. Commenters were making a correlation between the Prius chase and Reginald Denny, a construction truck driver who was yanked from his vehicle and nearly beaten to death after being smashed in the head with a cinder block during the 1992 Los Angeles riots.

On Wednesday night, a car plowed through a crowd of people at a Breonna Taylor protest in Denver. The driver has been detained, according to the Denver Police Department.
