LA teachers union voted 'overwhelmingly to resist premature return,' slams reopening plan as 'propagating structural racism'

Classrooms in the second-largest school district in the nation will continue to be dark for the immediate future after the powerful United Teachers of Los Angeles voted "overwhelmingly" not to return to in-person learning until they deem work conditions to be safe.

The UTLA announced on Friday that its "members have voted overwhelmingly to resist a premature and unsafe physical return to school sites." Of the UTLA members, 91% voted not to return to classrooms until certain "safety criteria" are met.

The teachers refuse to return to classroom learning until Los Angeles County is out of the purple tier. According to California's "Blueprint for a Safer Economy" restrictions, purple tier regions are areas that have "widespread" COVID-19 infections. In order to get out of the purple tier, a county needs to have fewer than seven coronavirus cases per 100,000 and less than 8% of positive COVID-19 tests. Most of the state of California is in the purple tier, and has been for months.

The Los Angeles teachers union also states that they won't reopen schools until "staff are either fully vaccinated or provided access to full vaccination." California entered Phase 1B of its COVID-19 vaccination effort this month, which allows coronavirus shots for individuals who are age 65 and older, those who work in agriculture, food, emergency services, childcare, and education.

Before they return to classrooms, the United Teachers of Los Angeles also demanded that "safety conditions are in place at our schools including PPE, physical distancing, improved ventilation, and daily cleaning."

"This vote signals that in these most trying times, our members will not accept a rushed return that would endanger the safety of educators, students, and families," said UTLA president Cecily Myart-Cruz said.

On Thursday, both chambers of California's Legislature nearly unanimously passed a school reopening. The bill does not require schools to reopen, but holds back approximately $2 billion in grant money until districts return for at least part-time in-person learning by March 31. The school will lose 1% of the grant money for every day after April 1 that there is not in-person education, according to the Daily Wire.

The United Teachers of Los Angeles responded to the reopening plan by labeling it as "a recipe for propagating structural racism."

"If you condition funding on the reopening of schools, that money will only go to white and wealthier and healthier school communities that do not have the transmission rates that low-income black and brown communities do," Myart-Cruz said. "This is a recipe for propagating structural racism and it is deeply unfair to the students we serve."

"We are being unfairly targeted by people who are not experiencing this disease in the same ways as students and families are in our communities," the UTLA president added. "If this was a rich person's disease, we would've seen a very different response. We would not have the high rate of infections and deaths. Now educators are asked instead to sacrifice ourselves, the safety of our students, and the safety of our schools."

The Los Angeles Unified School District has over 600,000 students in kindergarten through twelfth grade at over 1,000 schools.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention released guidelines on how schools should reopen in February, which clearly stated that school reopening should not be conditional on having teachers and faculty vaccinated.

In July, Dr. Robert Redfield, then-director of the CDC, cautioned about the psychological damage that lockdowns and remote schooling could inflict on children.

"But there has been another cost that we've seen, particularly in high schools," he said. "We're seeing, sadly, far greater suicides now than we are deaths from COVID. We're seeing far greater deaths from drug overdose that are above excess that we had as background than we are seeing the deaths from COVID."

The former CDC director also said in July that he would "100%" have his grandchildren go back to school.

Last month, the nation's fifth-largest school district proclaimed that it wanted to reopen as "quickly as possible" after a rash of student suicides. Clark County School District in Nevada experienced double the number of student suicides in nine months this year compared to all of last year.

Following a worrying number of child suicides and suicide attempts, the city of San Francisco filed a lawsuit against its own school district to reopen.

TikTok video shows Gavin Newsom inside a restaurant while not social distancing

Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom was seen inside a restaurant in Fresno, California, where restaurants are only permitted to be open if they are outside because of Newsom's own stay-at-home order.

Newsom is seen on a TikTok video and photos at the Los Amigos restaurant in Fresno. Based on Newsom's "Blueprint for a Safer Economy" restrictions, Fresno is a purple tier area, which means the area has "widespread" COVID-19 infections. Purple tier regions prohibit bars, breweries, and distilleries to be open, plus indoor dining is banned. Only restaurants and wineries may offer outdoor service.

Despite Newsom's own strict coronavirus constraints that he signed into effect, the governor was inside a restaurant. Newsom, who has preached social distancing to his constituents for months, is seen not physically distancing in the restaurant.

In a video posted by the restaurant, Lopez is seen without a face mask and not practicing social distancing, which Newsom has demanded all Californians practice since the beginning of the pandemic.

Chef Andrew Gruel, a prominent restaurateur in Los Angeles, claimed that Newsom was "dining/drinking" at the restaurant. He astutely noted that the restaurant had a table full of refreshments that commenters believe to be pitchers of water with limes or margaritas.

Gruel called for Newsom's resignation on Twitter:

Newsom must resign ASAP. Yesterday he was inside a restaurant dining and doing a painfully cringe-worthy "bit" with George Lopez in a county that is NOT ALLOWED to have indoor dining. It is in purple tier. This is a slap in the face to every restaurant worker. Every citizen.

A spokesperson for Newsom's office told Fox News that the governor did not dine at the restaurant. Newsom's camp said he was there to meet with the restaurant's owners, who received a COVID-19 relief grant.

Newsom infamously sparked criticism in November after he flouted his own coronavirus rules when he was caught dining at the luxurious French Laundry in Napa. The Michelin-star restaurant reportedly received $2.4 million in Paycheck Protection Program loans from the Small Business Administration, which is allegedly 17 times more than the average California restaurant.

California voters who are disappointed in Newsom's leadership and hypocrisy during the coronavirus pandemic have started a petition to recall him. The petition organized by The Recall Newsom campaign purportedly has 1,825,000 signatures, more than the necessary threshold of 1,497,709 signatures.

During a speech at CPAC, former Acting Director of National Intelligence Richard Grenell hinted that he may run for governor of California if Newsom is recalled.

VIDEO: Protesters in Huntington Beach fight back against Newsom's curfew and California lockdowns

Protesters gathered in Huntington Beach to resist California Gov. Gavin Newsom's new coronavirus curfew. The protest, which mostly party-like atmosphere, saw demonstrators merrily dancing and singing.

On Thursday, Newsom issued a new COVID-19 curfew that prohibited "non-essential work, movement and gatherings" in the state's "purple tier," which are counties where there are more than seven cases per 100,000 residents. California considers these areas to have "widespread" coronavirus outbreaks. Most of the state, which has a population of 40 million, is labeled as having widespread outbreaks, including all of the major metropolitan areas.

The order states that California counties in the purple tier must prohibit members of other households from gathering "between 10:00pm PST and 5:00am PST, except for those activities associated with the operation, maintenance, or usage of critical infrastructure or required by law."

The order justified the curfew by stating, "Activities conducted during 10:00pm to 5:00am are often non-essential and more likely related to social activities and gatherings that have a higher likelihood of leading to reduced inhibition and reduced likelihood to adhere to COVID-19 preventive measures (e.g., wearing face coverings and maintaining physical distance)."

The order provides an exception: "This order does not apply to persons experiencing homelessness."

The curfew went into effect at 10:00 p.m. PST on Saturday, and will remain in effect until 5:00 a.m. PST on Dec. 21, but "may be extended or revised as needed."

Many Californians felt the curfew is too rigid and took to the streets of Huntington Beach to rally against the Democratic governor's new restrictions. On Saturday night, hundreds of people gathered in defiance of Newsom and to show their support for President Donald Trump.

People waved American, Gadsden, and "Trump 2020" flags as cars honked their horns in support of the anti-lockdown rally. People were chanting: "U-S-A! U-S-A!" and "Latinos for Trump!" Lee Greenwood's patriotic song, "God Bless the USA," was blaring during the protest.

California sheriffs have already come out and said that they will not enforce Newsom's curfew.

Orange County Sheriff Don Barnes issued a statement that his officers would not be enforcing the COVID-19 guidelines.

"Earlier today, the Orange County Sheriff's Department became aware of a limited Stay at Home Order that Governor Newsom's office ordered to go into effect on Saturday, November 21 at 10 PM," Barnes said in the statement. "Throughout the pandemic, the Orange County Sheriff's Department has taken an education-first approach with regard to the public health orders."

"At this time, due to the need to have deputies available for emergency calls for service, deputies will not be responding to requests for face-coverings or social gatherings-only enforcement," Barnes declared.

On Thursday, Fresno County Sheriff Margaret Mims said, "We've got a lot of things to do, including taking guns away from gang members, stopping narcotic trafficking, and saving children from internet predators. We're not gonna make criminals of normally law-abiding citizens."

Many Californians are still furious with Newsom for disregarding his own coronavirus restrictions and guidelines by not social distancing and not wearing a face mask while eating at a swanky restaurant with several members of different households last week for a birthday party.
