Damar Hamlin 'fully cleared' to play football again just 3 months after scary, on-field collapse

Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin has been "fully cleared" by medical professionals to return to professional football, the team has confirmed.

General Manager Brandon Beane shared the good news at a press conference on Tuesday morning. Hamlin is "cleared to resume full activities just like anyone else who is coming back from an injury," Beane stated.

Beane explained that Hamlin remains in touch with medical specialists, who have all approved Hamlin for a full return to play. "They're all in agreement," Beane said. "...They're all in lockstep" that Hamlin should be able to play without further restrictions.

"He's fully cleared, he's here, and he's ... in a great headspace to come back and make his return," Beane concluded.

"Glad to have you back, 3," the team tweeted on Tuesday in support of Hamlin, who wears number 3.

Hamlin's full clearance seems like a fitting conclusion to a recovery that some have described as "miraculous." On January 2, Hamlin appeared to make a routine tackle on Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Tee Higgins. However, shortly after the tackle, Hamlin collapsed to the ground, prompting medical personnel to perform life-saving measures on the field in Paycor Stadium. Reports indicate that Hamlin had to be resuscitated twice that night, once on the field and once later at the hospital. The game was ultimately canceled.

At just 24 years old, Hamlin had gone into cardiac arrest and was initially listed in critical condition. However, within days, he was communicating with teammates via FaceTime, and before the end of the month, Hamlin had already released a video which showed him in good health and in good spirits.

Hamlin's health scare quickly took on a religious component. The day after Hamlin's collapse, ESPN host Dan Orlovsky spontaneously led fellow "NFL Live" panelists in prayer for Hamlin's recovery, and players from around the league soon began wearing warm-up shirts that read, "Pray for Damar." Bills quarterback Josh Allen claimed that the team experienced a "spiritual awakening" soon after the incident, and after his release from the University of Cincinnati Medical Center, Hamlin made several public appearances praising God for his recovery and for those who have assisted him along the way.

"What happened to me on Monday Night Football, I feel, is a direct example of God using me as a vessel to share my passion and my love directly from my heart with the entire world," he said.

Hamlin, Allen, and the rest of the Bills likely have high expectations for themselves next year after falling short again last season. On January 21, less than three weeks after Hamlin's collapse, the Bills had their Super Bowl aspirations thwarted for the second year in a row when they lost to the Bengals in the divisional round of the playoffs. NFL schedules for the 2023-24 season have not yet been released, but the Bills will likely begin their season in the first or second week of September.

Damar Hamlin speaks for first time since on-field collapse: 'With God's guidance, I will continue to do wonderful and great things'

Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin has issued a video statement on Instagram, marking the first time most people have seen his face up close and heard his voice since he suffered a cardiac arrest on the field earlier this month.

On Saturday evening, Hamlin, 24, posted a six-minute video to his Instagram account. In the video, aptly titled "Thank You: A message from Damar Hamlin," Hamlin delivers a series of statements, most of them expressions of gratitude for various people and groups who have assisted him in his recovery.

Hamlin opens the video by walking into camera view in what appears to be a Bills facility. He places a jacket on a chair and then speaks directly into the camera, though the film regularly flashes to images and clips of others, including medical personnel, other NFL players, fans, and members of his family.

"It's just been a lot to process," Hamlin admits, "but I can't tell you how appreciative I am of all the love, all the support, and everything's that's just been coming in my way."

"What happened to me on Monday Night Football, I feel, is a direct example of God using me as a vessel to share my passion and my love directly from my heart with the entire world," Hamlin states. "And now I'm able to give it back to kids and communities all across the world who need it the most, and that's always been my dream. That's always been what I stood for and what I'll continue to stand for."

On January 2, Hamlin went into cardiac arrest after taking a hit to the chest as he tackled wide receiver Tee Higgins of the Cincinnati Bengals. Hamlin required immediate medical assistance, and emergency teams had to resuscitate him twice that night. The game never resumed.

Despite the severity of the immediate situation, Hamlin has since progressed "remarkably" and was able to return to Buffalo roughly a week after the incident. The cause of his collapse has either not yet been determined or not yet been released.

In the last few weeks, however, rumors have swirled on social media about whether Hamlin has improved as much as had been indicated. Hamlin's face has often been obscured, even during so-called "public appearances." Though he attended the Bills' playoff game on January 22 — against the Cincinnati Bengals, no less — the camera gave no close-ups of his face, even as he entered Highmark Stadium, and audiences mainly saw just his silhouette through the suite window during the game.

Even an image posted to Hamlin's Instagram account earlier this week showed Hamlin in sunglasses and a hoodie sweatshirt and gazing toward the ground, prompting some to speculate that he was deliberately shielding his face. Others even suggested that Hamlin may have used a body double, either to hide supposed setbacks in his recovery or to monetize his return by "selling" an interview to a big-name journalist like Oprah Winfrey.

BlazeTV's Jason Whitlock seemed to speak for many skeptics this week when he asked, "Why the secrecy?"

Hamlin addressed those rumors indirectly, stating in the video that he had been waiting for "the right time" to speak publicly.

"Now that my brothers have closed out a strong winning season as I continued to make so much progress recovering, I think it's finally a good time to share a few things," Hamlin says to open the video. "I think it was important for me to wait and speak publicly at the right time, as it was just a lot to process within my own self. Mentally, physically, even spiritually, it's just been a lot to process."

Hamlin spends the majority of the video thanking people, often by name, including the Bills' training staff; medical teams at "Cincinnati Medical Center and Buffalo General Hospital"; his mother, father, and little brother; the Bills organization and the NFL as a whole; loyal Bills fans known as "Bills Mafia"; Bengals fans; donors to his organization, the Chasing M's foundation; and all the "kids who sent [him] letters and heartwarming gifts."

"'It's always been important for me to be a role model, but just seeing the love and support from the youth, it just makes me want to give back and get out in the communities and touch the kids and be that example that they can look to, touch, feel, talk to and know that whatever they dream of, it's real. It can happen, if you stay focus, stay dedicated, stay committed to whatever you've got going on," Hamlin states.

"While I’m so thankful to everybody, I know that it isn’t enough just to be thankful," Hamlin says to close his message. "This is just the beginning of the impact that I wanted to have on the world. I couldn’t do this without any of this support and the love, and I can’t wait to continue to take y’all on this journey with me."

He then ends the video by making the shape of a heart with his hands, a signature move which seems to express love and make subtle reference to his health and recovery.

David Hogg wants to know why you don't need a license to kill humans. No, really.

Gun control activist and Harvard whiz kid David Hagg took to Twitter to ask a very serious question about gun rights in this country, and he'd like to remind the court of public opinion that he's entitled to own special level of dumb.

“If you need a license to kill deer why don’t you need one to kill humans?” Hogg tweeted, adding “Plenty of people will think this is dumb- good for you. I’m not looking out for an election and I’m entitled to my own opinion no matter how much you disagree."

If you need a license to kill deer why don\u2019t you need one to kill humans?

Well, ask and ye shall receive. Twitter was happy to offer David some friendly information and advice.

It's illegal to kill people.

Would rather keep murder illegal, but you're entitled to your opinion, Harvard McHitman
— Razor (@Razor) 1648933027
What if we made murder illegal? That could work.
— Rich (@Rich) 1648912868

The only time it is legal to kill someone, you have to get a lot more than a license, buddy. You have to get a final judgment from a jury that passes through dozens of appeals and then the person who does it still has to be licensed but otherwise sick burn on gun owners

I'll type slowly so you can keep up. Because we don't give out licenses to kill humans. We charge people who intentionally kill humans -- save in self-defense -- with committing a crime (in some cases punishable by death). Dear David - your thought is flawed. 1st deer are a food source like cows, chicken, pigs, etc. Your statement implies that by granting a license it would be perfectly fine to hunt fellow human beings. God Lord Son, seek professional help.

The last time I checked, unless it's in self-defense, killing humans was still illegal... has that changed?

COVID-quarantined Hillary Clinton asks for movie suggestions — instantly regrets it

Be careful what you ask for, especially when you're a certain former secretary of state with ties to Hollywood-worthy catastrophes, such as what happened in Benghazi or with Jeffrey Epstein.

As you may have heard by now, Hillary Clinton has tested positive for COVID but is "feeling fine." The former first lady made the announcement on Twitter (adding a pitch for the COVID vaccine) before asking for "movie recommendations."

"Well, I've tested positive for COVID. I've got some mild cold symptoms but am feeling fine. I'm more grateful than ever for the protection vaccines can provide against serious illness. Please get vaccinated and boosted if you haven't already!" she tweeted. "Bill tested negative and is feeling fine. He's quarantining until our household is fully in the clear. Movie recommendations appreciated!"

Coincidentally, several helpful folks on Twitter came up with the same recommendation: "13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi."

Equally coincidentally, a fair few people thought "Jeffrey Epstein: Filthy Rich" would be a good choice.

Some people got creative, suggesting alternative options such as "15 Minutes of Shame," "Impeachment: American Crime Story," and the classic "Liar Liar."

Video: Hero Ukrainian soldier sacrifices himself to blow up bridge and stop advancing Russian troops

A Ukrainian service member reportedly sacrificed his life to detonate explosives on a bridge before Russian forces could cross it into Ukraine.

What are the details?

According to reports, Vitaly Skakun Volodymyrovych blew up the bridge — sacrificing himself — to prevent Russian tanks from advancing over a bridge from Russian-occupied Crimea into mainland Ukraine.

Volodymyrovych was said to have mined the bridge with explosives before making the decision to detonate it.

In a Facebook post, the general staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine said that Volodymyrovych positioned himself at the bridge as Russian tanks began their advance. When he realized that he would not be able to get out in time, he detonated the bridge while still on it.

In video obtained from social media, a vehicle believe to be driven by Volodymyrovych can be seen entering the bridge. Just moments later, the screen is filled with blinding light from the huge explosion's fireball.

The apparent aftermath of the blast can be seen in a second video, which shows the remainder of the structure rutted with deep cracks and covered with broken rocks and other debris.

What else is there to know about this?

In a lengthy statement on Volodymyrovych's bravery and sacrifice, Ukraine's general staff said, “The bridge was mined, but he didn’t manage to get away from there. According to his brothers in arms, Vitaly got in touch [with them] and said he was going to blow up the bridge. Immediately after an explosion rang out.”

A Friday report from the Sun noted that his comrades are now hailing him as a hero for "significantly slowing down the advancement of the enemy" — a move that also afforded the Ukrainian force time to "regroup and redeploy its defenses."

The statement added that the Marine Command plans to "apply to the High Command to award the state award to sailor Skakun Vitaliy Volodymyrovych.”

Woman’s service dog reportedly attacks toddler. Child's family claims she blamed the child and fled the scene.

A woman's service dog reportedly bit a three-year-old girl while in a Texas restaurant — and then she and the dog allegedly fled the scene without taking responsibility for the bloody attack.

The child received 15 to 20 stitches after the disturbing incident, and police say that they're set to question the woman over the attack.

Justice For Ronin. https://t.co/YpNy5hEvvX
— D.Allan (@D.Allan)1610456577.0

What are the details?

According to the Kansas City Star, 3-year-old Ronin Waldroup was visiting a restaurant with her family in Spring, Texas, on Saturday when an as-yet unidentified woman's service dog clamped onto the child's face and shook her back and forth like a rag doll.

Cleveratta Waldroup, the child's mother, said that she and her family had just entered the restaurant when the dog, which was leashed, snapped at the child's face, biting her and shaking her.

"[The dog] grabbed [Ronin] by the face and he shook her, and I saw my baby hit the ground like a little rag doll," Cleveratta said of the incident. "The first thing my best friend did was grab her and put her in my arms."

Cleveratta's friend, Kimberly Parker, said that the dog "had a hold of her face and shook her."

"The lady pulled on the leash, the dog released her, and she just dropped," Parker recalled.

While Cleveratta rushed the child to the nearby restroom to assess her injuries, the child's father, James Waldroup, chased the woman — who, with the dog, had since left the premises — down the street and demanded that she remain at the scene, the family said. The woman reportedly refused and left anyway, saying that it was the child's fault that the dog attacked her.

"I started yelling at her, 'You can't leave, this is an accident! You can't leave!' She had the gall to turn around and tell me it was my daughter's fault," he recalled, explaining that several eyewitnesses saw that the child did not reach for the dog at all, but that the dog, instead, "leaped toward her."

'Mommy, I'm ugly'

According to the outlet, the child's jaw was injured and required stitches to close the gashes in her cheek.

"Right now, she's going to be in a lot of pain. She's in a lot of pain," Cleveratta said of her young daughter.

What Cleveratta said she witnessed in her daughter's behavior days after the attack is heartbreaking.

"My husband and I walked in our bedroom, and [Ronin] has my makeup brushes, trying to put makeup on her face," Cleveratta said. "I asked her, 'What is wrong? Why are you doing that?' For a 3-year-old to turn to me and say, 'Mommy, I'm ugly,' it's earth-shattering."

The outlet reported that the Harris County Sheriff's Office is aware of the incident, knows who owns the dog, and is scheduled to meet with her to discuss the incident. The district attorney's office will determine whether charges will be filed following the meeting's outcome.

A GoFundMe page to cover the child's future medical expenses has received more than $10,500 in donations at the time of this reporting.
