'You desperately want censorship': Elon Musk defends free speech as Don Lemon insists X needs 'content moderation'

Former CNN host Don Lemon sparred with owner of the X platform and entrepreneur Elon Musk over alleged hate speech on the app, which Lemon said is need of content moderation.

Lemon launched a talk show across most social media platforms after being fired from CNN in 2023. The first episode of "The Don Lemon Show" featured and interview with Musk inside a Tesla manufacturing plant.

After discussing Tesla and pressing Musk on who he will support in the 2024 presidential election, Lemon began a lengthy segment endorsing the idea that X is in desperate need of content moderation.

"These are just a handful of extremely ... anti-Semitic and racist tropes and tweets, and as of this morning they're still on X," Lemon said, while showing Musk printouts of offensive memes of varying degrees.

"We delete things if they are illegal," Musk replied.

"But these have been up there for a while," Lemon came back.

"Are they illegal?" Musk asked.

"They're not illegal, but they're hateful and they can lead to violence," Lemon decried, showcasing the crux of most of the former network anchor's argument. Lemon then cited studies purporting to show an increase in "hate speech" on X — which Musk refuted — and argued with the billionaire at length as to why the platform should have stricter controls on speech.

Musk took Lemon's remarks as an advocacy for censorship.

"So, Don, you love censorship is what you're saying," Musk asserted.

"No, I don't love censorship. I believe in moderation, but I don't believe in censorship," Lemon stated.

"Moderation is a propaganda word for censorship. ... If something's illegal we're going to take it down, if it's not illegal, then we're putting our thumb on the scale and we're being censors," the SpaceX operator explained.

Don Lemon wasn't interviewing Elon Musk; he was just promoting the mainstream media propaganda.

📹 youtube/thedonlemonshow

Lemon attempted to connect online "hate speech" to mass shooters across the world and the "great replacement theory," which he called a "Jewish conspiracy." Lemon complained that conspiracy theories have perpetuated on X, again due to a lack of content moderation.

Just when it seemed the two were going to move on from the topic, Musk reiterated that Lemon was advocating for censorship outside United States laws.

"You want censorship, and I don't," Musk insisted.

"No, I don't want censorship; I want responsibility," Lemon attempted to explain.

"You desperately want censorship," Musk retorted. "You want censorship so bad you can taste it. ... We have a responsibility to adhere to the law, and if people want the law changed, they should talk their elected representative and get the law changed, and then we will adhere to the law."

"You want censorship and I don't," @elonmusk tells @donlemon over and over he doesn't want censorship and believes in free speech in accordance with the law -

Lemon continuously rewords it as 'moderation':

Lemon's new show was originally supposed to be an X-backed show, as part of a new lineup that included sports host Jim Rome and former Democratic Rep. Tulsi Gabbard (Hawaii).

However, Lemon reported that their deal had been squashed by Musk just hours after their sit-down was recorded.

Soon thereafter, it was reported that Lemon had made incredible requests as part of his contract, which included a podcast in outer space via SpaceX, a Tesla Cybertruck, a $5 million advance on an $8 million salary, and equity in the X platform.

Agent Jay Sures from the United Talent Agency told the New York Post that the allegations were "absolute, complete utter nonsense without an iota of truth to it."

X declined to comment on the details of the partnership.

Don Lemon reveals he listens to Ben Shapiro and Patrick Bet-David now, recommends podcast with Chet Hanks

Don Lemon revealed his holiday recommendations for what readers should stream over the Christmas break, and his list surprisingly revealed suggestions that included conservatives Ben Shapiro and Patrick Bet David.

The editors of Puck, a media company that focuses on Hollywood, Wall Street, Silicon Valley, and Washington, D.C., featured the former CNN anchor in the outlet's "non-denominational holiday gift recommendations" guide.

"Since leaving corporate media I cut the cord," Lemon began. "I have an extensive, eclectic streaming palate now," he continued before revealing his recommendations.

First, Lemon noted Showtime series "Fellow Travelers," a show that "centers on the decades-long romance" between two gay men in the 1950s.

Then, Lemon recommended business mogul Patrick Bet-David's "PBD Podcast," which he described as "very conservative." The pundit then noted that he also listens to "The Ben Shapiro Show" because he wants to "hear his take on Israel."

Rounding out some of his other streaming suggestions were "Piers Morgan Uncensored," which Lemon labeled "very real, authentic conversations you don’t get in corporate media," and "The Adam Friedland Show."

"Smart, irreverent, funny; download the Chet Hanks episode for evidence," Lemon said of the podcast.

Friedland is a stand-up comedian who hosts other comics, celebrities, and, in Lemon's recommended episode, Chet Hanks. The sometimes forgotten and controversial son of Tom Hanks, Chet is an off-the-wall character who often speaks with a patois accent.

During the episode in question, Hanks stated that he believes Donald Trump is going to win the 2024 election after he heard rappers Future and Lil Baby were spotted with the former president.

"He's gonna win, dude," Hanks stated.

Lemon was fired by CNN after 17 years in April 2023 and said that he didn't even receive a call from management.

"I was informed [that] morning by my agent that I have been terminated by CNN,” Lemon said, according to SCNR. "I would have thought that someone in management would have had the decency to tell me directly," he continued.

"At no time was I ever given any indication that I would not be able to continue to do the work I have loved at the network. It is clear that there are some larger issues at play," Lemon added.

Other special guests for the holiday guide included actress Gwyneth Paltrow, who recommended a cardigan she was seen wearing during a recent court case.

'Bold': Tucker Carlson crushes it with views on another Twitter monologue, earns plaudits from Elon Musk

Carlson has posted three episodes of his new show on Twitter, and each tweet so far has amassed huge view counts.

The tweet containing the third episode, which Carlson released on Tuesday evening, has reached more than 78 million views so far. The tweet featuring his second episode has more than 57 million views and the tweet containing the first episode of Carlson's new show has more than 116 million views so far.

During the third episode, Carlson claimed that the Washington establishment opposes former President Donald Trump due to Trump's anti-war views. Carlson said that Trump is the one individual with a chance at winning the presidency "who dissents from Washington's longstanding pointless war agenda. And for that, that one fact, they're trying to take Trump out before you can vote for him."

Elon Musk described Tucker Carlson's latest Twitter monologue as "Bold." In a follow up tweet, he elaborated, apparently indicating that Carlson's remarks represented a bold "attack on the military-industrial complex. The lobbying power of large government contractors is far higher than it should be for the good of the people," Musk wrote.

"Once again, I’d like to offer this platform to anyone on the left. You will get equal treatment," he has also tweeted.

When retweeting Carlson's second episode last week Musk noted that he would like to see Don Lemon and Rachel Maddow do shows on Twitter.

"It'd be great to have @maddow, @donlemon & others on the left put their shows on this platform. No exclusivity or legal docs required! You will receive our full support. The digital town square is for all," Musk wrote.

New details about Don Lemon's ouster say CNN execs left 'exasperated' after race-focused debate with GOP guest

Don Lemon's contentious interview with Republican presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy last week may have been the straw that broke the camel's back for CNN executives.

Last Wednesday, "CNN This Morning" hosted Ramaswamy to discuss his campaign and his views on critical issues. But the interview derailed when Lemon took issue with Ramaswamy's assertion that the first gun control laws in American history were enacted after the Civil War to prevent freed slaves from exercising their Second Amendment rights.

At one point in that interview, Lemon asserted that Ramaswamy was not allowed to speak about the issue because he is not black. After minutes of tense back-and-forth, Lemon swiftly ended the interview.

According to sources who spoke to the New York Times, that interview left CNN executives "exasperated."

“While debating post Civil War history, @donlemon preposterously claimed that “black people still aren’t allowed to enjoy their freedoms.” That’s an insult to the progress we’ve made over the last 160 years. His comments embody what’s wrong with the dialogue about race in America.…”
— Vivek Ramaswamy (@Vivek Ramaswamy) 1681912362

But the interview was just one more piece of a house of cards that ultimately collapsed on Monday.

It came weeks after a Variety exposé publicized new allegations against Lemon, charging him with more than a decade of misogynistic and abusive behavior toward his female colleagues at CNN. The network fiercely defended Lemon from those accusations.

That exposé came about two months after Lemon's most controversial moment. After Nikki Haley announced her presidential campaign, Lemon declared that Haley, at just 51 years old, is past her "prime." That charge caused internal uproar at CNN and a tidal wave of backlash online. Lemon was benched for several days from "CNN This Morning" and was subjected to sensitivity training.

Before the Haley controversy, Lemon was accused of leaving his CNN crew "rattled" after "screaming" at Kaitlan Collins, his "CNN This Morning" co-host.

According to the New York Times, the accumulation of controversial incidents meant "executives at CNN gradually concluded that his future at CNN had become untenable, according to two people who spoke on the condition of anonymity because the internal discussions were sensitive."

More from the Times:

In recent weeks, CNN’s bookers had discovered that some guests did not want to appear on the air with Mr. Lemon, and research on the morning show reviewed by CNN executives found that his popularity with audiences had fallen, one of the people said.

Perhaps it was fitting, then, that Collins and Poppy Harlow spent less than 40 seconds addressing Lemon's departure from the show they co-hosted with him.

'Hey ladies': Patricia Heaton responds to Don Lemon's comments about when women are in their 'prime'

In response to remarks CNN's Don Lemon made about when women are in their "prime," actress Patricia Heaton took to social media and listed many of her own accomplishments, urging other women to do the same.

Former U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley, who has mounted a presidential bid, called for "mandatory mental competency tests for politicians over 75 years old." Haley is 51.

Lemon said that he is "uncomfortable" focusing on the issue of age and he said that Haley is not in her prime. The media figure claimed that a Google search about when women are in their prime would yield results indicating that women in their 20s, 30s, and 40s are in their prime, though he added that he was not saying that he agreed with that notion.

“Don Lemon: "Nikki Haley isn’t in her prime. Sorry, when a woman is considered to be in her prime in her 20s, and 30s, and maybe 40s…"

Poppy Harlow: "Are you talking about prime for like child bearing?"

"Don’t shoot the messenger! I’m just saying what the facts are! Google it!"”
— Townhall.com (@Townhall.com) 1676559460

Lemon later issued a tweet expressing regret over his comments. "The reference I made to a woman’s 'prime' this morning was inartful and irrelevant, as colleagues and loved ones have pointed out, and I regret it. A woman's age doesn't define her either personally or professionally. I have countless women in my life who prove that every day," he wrote.

Haley responded, "To be clear, I am NOT calling for competency tests for Sexist middle-aged CNN anchors; only for people who make our laws and are 75+."

— Nikki Haley (@Nikki Haley) 1676578929

Heaton, who is 64, urged women to share what they have accomplished over the age of 50 and shared a list featuring some of her own achievements.

"Hey Ladies - @donlemon thinks women over 50 are past their prime! Let's start #primetime and list some of the things we've accomplished in these glorious later years. I'll start:- Produced the comedy feature Unexpected (available on iTunes/AmazinPrime) #primetime," Heaton tweeted.

"Wrote and published the book Your Second Act: Inspiring Stories of Reinvention (Simon and Schuster)," she noted in another tweet. "Produced and starred in the sitcom Carol's Second Act for CBS," she added. "Starred in the @ABCNetwork hit show @TheMiddle_TV," she said in another post. Heaton also listed other accomplishments in the thread.

CNN's Don Lemon brings up 'race' of 'five black officers' charged with murdering black man; Memphis police chief replies that 'race' isn't reason for bad policing

CNN's Don Lemon in an interview Friday with Memphis' police chief brought up the "race" of the "five black officers" charged with murdering Tyre Nichols, a black man, during a traffic stop earlier this month "in a black community."

Lemon said, "Five black officers, a black police chief in a black community — what do you make of the race of the officers and what that says to the community and to the country about the policing, the care —"

Chief Cerelyn “CJ” Davis replied to Lemon that "race" isn't the reason for policing problems.

"It takes off the table that issues and problems in law enforcement is about race, and it is not," she responded. "It's about human dignity, integrity, accountability, and the duty to protect our community. And as this video will show you, it doesn't matter who's wearing the uniform, that we all have that same responsibility. So, it takes race off the table, but it does indicate to me that bias might be a factor also in the manner in which we engage the community."

— CNN This Morning (@CNN This Morning) 1674823765

What's the background?

Nichols, 29, was hospitalized after being pulled over Jan. 7 for reckless driving and died from his injuries three days later. The five officers involved were fired for violating department policies after an internal investigation and arrested and booked into jail. Each officer was charged with second-degree murder, aggravated assault, two counts of aggravated kidnapping, two counts of official misconduct, and official oppression.

Davis also told Lemon that in the video of the traffic stop due to be released to the public Friday evening, “You’re going to see a disregard for life, duty of care that we’re all sworn to and a level of physical interaction that is above and beyond what is required in law enforcement," CNN reported.

"I heard him call out for his mother, for his mom,” Davis also said, according to CNN. “Just the disregard for humanity … That’s what really pulls at your heartstrings and makes you wonder: Why was a sense of care and concern for this individual just absent from the situation by all who went to the scene?”

She added, “I was in law enforcement during the Rodney King incident, and it’s very much aligned with that same type of behavior. I would say it’s about the same, if not worse," the cable network said.

“Memphis Police Chief tells @donlemon the video of Tyre Nichols' beating at the hands of Memphis Police is "about the same if not worse" than the 1991 police beating of Rodney King, which led to riots in Los Angeles:”
— CNN This Morning (@CNN This Morning) 1674823383

Los Angeles officers in 1991 were caught on video beating King after a vehicle chase; riots in LA and other major cities erupted in 1992 after officers were acquitted of using excessive force on King.

Due to the violent nature of the Nichols' video, Memphis officials are asking that any demonstrations over his death be conducted in a civil manner, CNN said.

Nichols’ mother, RowVaughn Wells, told supporters, “I don’t want us burning up our cities, tearing up the streets, because that’s not what my son stood for. And if you guys are here for me and Tyre, then you will protest peacefully," the cable network added.

CNN's Don Lemon says 'I was not always perfect' as he wraps up final prime-time show — and gets mercilessly mocked

CNN's Don Lemon wrapped up an emotional finale of his prime-time program Friday night by telling viewers that "I was not always perfect" — as well as sniffling and fighting back tears — and he got roundly mocked for it.

What are the details?

Last month the embattled cable network, fighting a string of programming failures and ratings declines, announced that "Don Lemon Tonight" would be ending and that its left-wing host would be co-anchoring a new morning show alongside Poppy Harlow and Kaitlan Collins, which will debut sometime this year.

With time running out on his final prime-time gig, Lemon told viewers, "I know I was not always perfect, because no one is perfect. Because there are immense pressures that come with this job and in particular this time slot at 10 o’clock, when people are going to bed. So sometimes all I could do — I'm gonna be honest with you — is just smile and just get to the commercial break sometimes.”

He concluded by saying, "Sometimes it was exhausting, because some of the things that we discuss here are so personal and so consuming, all-consuming. So I hope I made you proud. And I thank you for tuning in all these years. And I hope that you're gonna join me in the morning. So I will simply say good night, and I will see you soon."

Things got a little theatrical as Lemon waved at the camera and said, “I’m gonna leave, and I'm gonna go upstairs.” He did just that, standing up as the camera followed him trudging up the flight of stairs at the back of his set as he blurted out a squeaky "Bye!" and sniffled and sighed and muttered on his way out.

#journalist #donlemon quitting his show on#cnnyoutu.be

'Actually you were perfect, Don — perfectly never objective ...'

Folks commenting on the news of Lemon's final sign-off were none too kind, particularly in regard to his "I was not always perfect" utterance:

 • "It’s funny that he actually thought he was perfect sometimes," one commenter noted.
 • "Actually you were perfect, Don — perfectly never objective on every subject....but then again no one watched you, especially me," another commenter said.
 • "Rarely, if ever, perfect. Helped spread the hate and discontent," another commenter wrote.
 • "Just like he said, nobody's perfect nor always perfect," another commenter noted. "He should have said, 'I make bad judgments.' Using the word perfect [for yourself] is stroking your own ego."

As for his emotional demeanor, more mockery:

 • "I fought back tears, too," another commenter said. "Tears of joy."
 • "Being demoted is sad, but this seems like party time!" another commenter exclaimed.
 • "Hilarious," another commenter wrote.

Anything else?

Prior to the announcement of Lemon's prime-time show coming to end, his left-wing pronouncements hadn't seemed as frequent. In July, for example, he said the media should not treat Democrats and Republicans as equals because the GOP is "very dangerous to our society"; in September, he defended President Joe Biden's "semi-fascism" term to describe "MAGA Republicans," arguing Biden's words were "unifying" because some believe they are "true."

But right after the announcement, Lemon's leftism seemed revived. In fact, he suggested the vast wealth inherited by King Charles III after the death of his mother, Queen Elizabeth II, should be spent on reparations for descendants of the victims of the African slave trade — after which a British commentator raked him over the coals.

Late last month, as Hurricane Ian was hitting Florida's west coast, Lemon tried and failed to get an expert from the National Hurricane Center to blame the storm's intensity on climate change.

British commentator clowns CNN's Don Lemon after he suggests royal family should pay for reparations

Recently sidelined CNN host Don Lemon was taken to school by British royal commentator Hilary Fordwich after he suggested the vast wealth inherited by King Charles III after the death of his mother Queen Elizabeth II should be spent on reparations for descendants of the victims of the African slave trade.

Following the queen's funeral on Monday, Lemon suggested to Fordwich that the Royal Family's wealth should be redistributed to alleviate inflation or pay for slavery reparations.

“All of this wealth — and you hear about it comes as England is facing rising costs of living, a living crisis and austerity budget cuts, and so on, and then you have those who are asking for reparations for colonialism," Lemon said. "Some of those people want to be paid back. Members of the public are asking ‘why are we suffering when you have all of this vast wealth?’ Those are legitimate concerns."

Fordwich answered that if people want reparations, they need to look back "to the beginning of the supply chain" for slavery. "That was in Africa," she said.

— Tom Elliott (@Tom Elliott) 1663663639

Then she gave Lemon a history lesson in how the British empire was the first nation in the world to abolish slavery thanks to the efforts of William Wilberforce, a devout Christian and member of Parliament.

"In Great Britain they abolished slavery. Two thousand naval men died on the high seas trying to stop slavery," Fordwich continued. "Why? Because the African kings were rounding up their own people, they had them on cages, waiting in the beaches. No one was running into Africa to get them. And I think you're totally right. If reparations need to be paid, we need to go right back to the beginning of that supply chain and say, who was rounding up their own people and having them hanged up in cages? Absolutely. That's where they should start."

She added that the descendants of the families who lost loved ones fighting the slave traders on the high seas "should receive something too" if reparations from Africa are to be given.

Lemon was left dumbfounded. "It's an interesting discussion, Hilary. Thank you very much, I appreciate it," he said.

Days ago, CNN Worldwide Chairman and CEO Chris Licht announced that Lemon would be sidelined from prime time and moved to a new morning show with co-anchors Poppy Harlow and Kaitlan Collins. The show is set to debut this later this year.

Lemon addressed the announcement on his show last Thursday, telling viewers, "I was not demoted."

CNN reporter tries to 'ambush' GOP candidate Kari Lake, IMMEDIATELY regrets it

CNN senior national reporter Kyung Lah thought she'd caught Republican Arizona gubernatorial candidate Kari Lake off guard when she asked for an impromptu interview outside an event, but ended up sorely regretting her decision.

Lake, a former Fox news anchor, shook hands with Lah as she approached and immediately pointed out that the CNN reporter wasn't wearing a mask any more, a barbed reference to a contentious interview in October 2021, in which Lah smeared the GOP candidate as a “rising star of the right-wing and proud spreader of lies." Lah asked if Lake had “a minute to chat.”

“I’ll do an interview," Lake answered, "as long as it airs on CNN+. Does that still exist? I didn’t think so, because the people don’t like what you guys are peddling, which is propaganda. Thank you.”

Dr. Anthony Fauci attends packed brunch event before WHCD after ceremoniously bowing out of dinner over 'personal risk'

Dr. Anthony Fauci attended a swanky event before the White House Correspondent's Association Dinner on Saturday after making headlines for withdrawing from the WCHD itself.

What is the background?

ABC News reportedly invited Fauci to the WHCD dinner, which was held on Saturday for the first time since 2019. But Fauci announced last week that he would not attend the event because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Fauci decided not to attend the dinner "because of my individual assessment of my personal risk," the New York Times reported.

Event organizers did not implement a face mask mandate for the more than 2,500 dinner attendees. Instead, to enter the dinner, everyone was required to prove they tested negative for COVID-19 on the day of the dinner. Every attendee was also required to be vaccinated against COVID-19.

But what did Fauci do?

While America's most controversial medical doctor did not attend the dinner itself, he attended a packed pre-dinner event — and did not wear a face mask.

Fauci attended the "Garden Brunch," an event that takes place the afternoon before the WHCD. The event "honors the freedom of the press and highlights the important work of veterans and military family organizations," according to WHC Insider.

Hollywood celebrities, journalists, politicians, and even top military leaders attended the event, according to TVNewser.

Here is Fauci with CNN anchor Don Lemon and journalist Jonathan Capehart:

Dr. Fauci even gave an interview at the brunch event in which he struck an unusually positive tone about the trajectory of the pandemic.

"We've been 2.5 years in the one of the most stressful times we've had since, you know, world wars if you look at that historically. We've still got to be careful; it isn't completely over, but it's certainly going in the right direction," Fauci said. "So we're glad to see people able to come out; they're vaccinated, they're boosted, they're tested, so it's pretty good."

Just last week, Fauci declared that the COVID pandemic "is not over."
