Democrats Celebrate More Americans Working Three Or More Jobs To Make Ends Meet
In May, 400,000 fewer Americans had jobs than in April. The so-called net jobs ‘added’ by Biden are actually some Americans working extra jobs.
The number of Americans working a primary full-time job and a secondary part-time job at the same time has reached its highest recorded total ever under President Biden.
The latest statistics from the Department of Labor, representing data up to November 2023, showed that more Americans than ever feel the need to work extra hours.
As KVVU reported, more than 5 million Americans have both a full-time and a part-time job, a number that reportedly plummeted during COVID-19 lockdowns. According to the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis, numbers prior to the lockdowns hadn't been that low since June 2010 under President Obama.
On the flip side, Americans with a primary full-time job and a secondary part-time job had previous highs around 4.7 million under President Trump in September 2019 and President Clinton in October 1998.
At the same time, Department of Labor statistics revealed that 8.4 million Americans are working multiple jobs. That number is up more than 680,000 since November 2022.
About 55% of Americans working multiple jobs are women, who make up 4.63 million. The gender split for those working a primary full-time job and a secondary part-time job is nearly equal, with men making up slightly more at 50.01%.
"You need two or three side hustles just to get by now. The cost of living has gone through the roof. Our rent’s gone up $500 in the last year. You just can’t survive on one income any more,” Florin Moise told the Las Vegas outlet.
Still, men make up the majority of the labor force (53%), and have an increased labor force participation rate in their gender. The male labor force participation rate as of November 2023 was 89.3%, while women were at 77.4%.
During the recession in President Obama's first term, unemployment rates skyrocketed, with similar numbers not seen again until the aforementioned COVID-19 lockdowns. Since those shutdowns, job numbers have increased with unemployment numbers coming back down near typical levels.
However, according to the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, there are still 9.4 million job openings with 6.3 million unemployed Americans.
