These 5 Fall Film Releases Show Inspirational Dramas Are Leveling Up
After this year’s runaway success of ‘Jesus Revolution’ and ‘Sound of Freedom,’ a handful of dramas are hoping to find a wide audience.
The film "Jesus Revolution," which is based on a true story, has reportedly trounced earnings expectations at the box office.
Collider reported that the movie is estimated to have raked in $15.5 million during a three-day debut, which includes numbers from pre-release screenings — it had only been projected to earn about $7 million going into the opening weekend, the outlet noted; Deadline reported that earnings in the range of $6-$7 million had been predicted. Box Office Mojo by IMDbPro indicates that the movie made a more than $15.8 million — the earnings increase to over $17 million when Monday is included.
The film has a whopping 99% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, though it has a much lower score of 56% on the Tomatometer, which involves critics.
Directed by Jon Erwin and Brent McCorkle, the movie earned an A+ CinemaScore, which marks Erwin's fourth film to secure an A+ CinemaScore rating.
"Jon Erwin has now achieved four A+ CinemaScores, more than any other filmmaker since we have been compiling data," CinemaScore president Harold Mintz noted, according to Collider. "For a director to achieve that accomplishment once is a rarity. But to hit that mark four times is not only an incredible distinction — it's unprecedented. Congratulations to Jon and Brent McCorkle and the entire team at Kingdom Story Company."
Kelsey Grammer of "Frasier" fame and Kimberly Williams-Paisley, the wife of country music superstar Brad Paisley, both have roles in the film.
"In the 1970s, young Greg Laurie (Joel Courtney) is searching for all the right things in all the wrong places: until he meets Lonnie Frisbee (Jonathan Roumie), a charismatic hippie-street-preacher," a movie description states. "Together with Pastor Chuck Smith (Kelsey Grammer), they open the doors of Smith’s languishing church to an unexpected revival of radical and newfound love, leading to what TIME Magazine dubbed a JESUS REVOLUTION."
Audiences have been leaving glowing reviews on Rotten Tomatoes.
