CNN host mounts surprising defense of Rep. Nancy Mace over her viral argument with George Stephanopoulos about Trump support
CNN anchor Kasie Hunt is defending Rep. Nancy Mace (R-S.C.) over viral argument with George Stephanopoulos.
On Sunday, Stephanopoulos used the fact that Mace is a rape survivor to question her political support for Donald Trump. The suggestion implicit in his question was that Mace's support for Trump contradicts her experience as a rape victim because a civil jury found Trump liable of sexual abuse. That jury, contrary to Stephanopoulos' repeated assertions, did not find him liable for rape.
On Monday, Hunt asked her fellow CNN host, Michael Smerconish, about the argument. But he admonished Mace for allegedly not answering Stephanopoulos' question.
"I'm sympathetic to her as a rape victim, but, despite the fact that she's a rape victim, she should have answered the question he was asking, which is: How can you, of all people, be comfortable supporting him?" Smerconish said.
But Hunt disagreed. In fact, she explained why Mace objected to Stephanopoulos' question, identifying that its premise was problematic.
"Here's the thing where I get hung up on it, though, and I think this is what she was trying to say, is that just because she happens to be the victim of rape doesn’t mean that she needs to let that victimhood define her and her future choices — regardless of what anybody else thinks — about how she should feel about someone who commits those kinds of crimes," Hunt explained.
"Do you think it should be OK to let the rapist have that kind of power over her future life?" she asked rhetorically.
And when Smerconish defended Stephanopoulos' question as "totally appropriate," Hunt pushed back again.
"Well, I mean, I think it's just that the fact that it was put in those terms: Like, as a rape victim, how could you?" she said.

Mace confirmed on Monday that she will not be returning to ABC News in the near future.
"I won't be going back on ABC anytime soon. I told [Stephanopoulos] as I was walking out, 'Good effing luck getting me back on,'" Mace recounted in an interview on NewsNation.

CNN host demands respect for Biden family when panelist obliterates narrative that Biden is 'family man'
CNN host Kasie Hunt demanded respect for the Bidens on Sunday when a panelist refused to applaud President Joe Biden for finally acknowledging his seventh grandchild.
What is the background?
For the last four years, Biden has refused to acknowledge Navy Joan Roberts, his biological grandchild who was born in 2018. Navy is the fourth biological child of Hunter Biden. To date, neither Joe nor Hunter has a relationship with Navy and, according to the most recent reports, neither have ever met Navy.
But finally on Friday — after a slew of bad press, including from Democrats — Biden released a brief statement acknowledging Navy.
"Our son Hunter and Navy's mother, Lunden, are working together to foster a relationship that is in the best interests of their daughter, preserving her privacy as much as possible going forward," Biden said in a statement, shared with People Magazine. "This is not a political issue, it’s a family matter. Jill and I only want what is best for all of our grandchildren, including Navy."
What happened on CNN?
On "State of the Union," CNN commentator Scott Jennings rebuked the happy "family man" narrative that persists about the Bidens. He was responding to former longtime Biden aide Michael LaRosa, who accused Republicans of weaponizing Navy against the president.
"It's not Republicans, with all due respect, who made Hunter Biden into a complete scumbag on this and other issues," Jennings stated matter-of-factly.
"The ignoring his own daughter for four years, and the president of the United States hanging up a stocking for the dog, and not for his seventh grandchild," he continued when Hunt interjected.
"We can also have sympathy for people who are struggling with addiction," she said. "Let's keep this conversation respectful!"
"Listen, I totally agree. And where I'm from, a lot of families deal with addiction. And you know who ends up picking up the pieces? The grandparents. And, in this case, the grandparents would not acknowledge this little girl. It is offensive," Jennings responded.
When Hunt defended the Bidens again, noting that "they have now" acknowledged Navy, Jennings suggested the Bidens had an ulterior motive for doing it now.
"Oh, what a hero," he mocked. "The polling must have been brutal. The polling must have been brutal."
