Texas abortion law allowed to resume after appeals court ruling

The Texas law that prohibits conducting abortions after a fetal heartbeat has been detected will go back into effect thanks to the issuance of a temporary stay by the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals.

The move came after U.S. District Judge Robert Pitman on Wednesday granted a temporary restraining order against the law. Pitman, who was appointed by former President Barack Obama, had written that "this Court will not sanction one more day of this offensive deprivation of such an important right."

"Great news tonight, The Fifth Circuit has granted an administrative stay on #SB8. I will fight federal overreach at every turn," tweeted Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton.

Due to the appeals court's move, the Lone Star State law is reinstated pending additional legal actions, according to Fox News.

The law prohibits conducting abortions once an unborn child's heartbeat has been detected, though there is an exception in the case of medical emergencies.

People can lodge civil actions against violators, and the law stipulates that if a claimant prevails, the court should award at least $10,000 in statutory damages.

The legislation, which took effect in September, has sparked significant national controversy. While it marks a clear victory for the pro-life movement, abortion proponents have decried the law.

Pro-life advocate Lila Rose, the founder and president of Live Action, cheered the news Friday night and tweeted, "The heartbeat law was saving an estimated 100 lives every day."

Truly amazing news. The heartbeat law was saving an estimated 100 lives every day.

New York Gov. Kathy Hochul calls for Facebook to crackdown on abortion-related 'misinformation'

New York Gov. Kathy Hochul is calling upon Facebook to take steps to counter abortion-related "misinformation."

In a letter to Facebook founder, chairman and CEO Mark Zuckerberg, the governor requested "information on any and all existing efforts to combat misinformation regarding abortion laws, procedures, and their availability." She also pressed for Zuckerberg to, "Take additional action to curb the spread of this misinformation, as Facebook has with information related to COVID-19, vaccines, and voting rights."

Hochul was sworn in as the governor of the Empire State last month after Andrew Cuomo stepped down amid a chorus of calls for his resignation after investigators concluded that he had sexually harassed multiple women. Cuomo said that he "never touched anyone inappropriately or made inappropriate sexual advances." Hochul is first woman ever to serve as governor of the state.

"Each day, posts are liked and shared on your site that make false claims about abortion procedures and reproductive health legislation, and this misinformation has hit close to home," Hochul said in the letter. "An analysis of Facebook engagement between January 1 and March 20, 2019, found that four of the top 10 stories receiving the most engagement on the platform were articles about the New York State Reproductive Health Act from anti-choice news sources that misrepresented the bill," she claimed, though the letter does not include a citation.

"These articles, memes, and other shared posts often describe horrific procedures that have no basis in reality, cite entirely made-up studies, and purposefully inflate or misrepresent public health data. The goal behind these posts is clear: to sow fear, confusion, and shame, and to advance an agenda to control women's bodies," she said.

While pro-choice advocates frequently claim that pro-life advocates aim to "control women's bodies," pro-life proponents point out that abortion actually ends the life of an unborn child and that the child's body is distinct and is not part of the pregnant woman's body.

"A child's body is not a woman's body. A child deserves to live and abortion doesn't empower women, it's violence," Live Action founder and President Lila Rose tweeted earlier this month.

WATCH: Kanye West: Kim Kardashian Saved Our Child When I Wanted An Abortion, Just Like My Mother Saved My Life

During his first 2020 presidential campaign event in South Carolina, Kanye West detailed how his wife Kim Kardashian saved their child North West from potential abortion.

West said he was still living the “rapper’s lifestyle” when Kardashian found out she was pregnant with baby North, the couple’s eldest child. The musical talent-turned-politico admitted that he did not want the baby, but Kardashian stood up and said she was going to have the child, for which West offered his wife immense praise.

“She brought North into the world, even when I didn’t want to,” he said. “She stood up and she protected that child.”

West likened Kardashian saving baby North to his late mother saving his life from abortion some 43 years ago.

“And she said I’m pregnant,” West recalled Kardashian finding out she was with child, adding that she was crying when she left the doctor’s office.

“I was living the rapper’s lifestyle,” West disclosed.

“For one month, and two months, and three months, we talked about her not having this child,” he said. “She had the (abortion) pills in her hand. You know those pills, where you take the pills and it’s a wrap, the baby’s gone.”

“I’m in the apartment in Paris,” West continued, “and I have my laptop up, and I have all my creative ideas … and the screen went black and white. And God said, if you f*** with my vision, I’m gonna f*** with yours.”

“And I called my wife, and she said we’re gonna have this baby,” he recalled. “I said, we’re gonna have this child.”

West said he knows people who are in their fifties “who did not have that child,” and who do not experience the immense “joy” he feels from having children.

“She brought North into the world, even when I didn’t want to,” he praised Kardashian. “She stood up and she protected that child.”

“You know who else protected a child?” he asked the crowd. “Forty-three years ago, who do you think protected a child?”

“My mom,” he said. “My mom saved my life.”

Earlier this month, West told Forbes that he is “pro-life because I’m following the word of the Bible.”

“Planned Parenthoods have been placed inside cities by white supremacists to do the Devil’s work,” he added.

As noted by The Daily Wire, West filed paperwork last week with the Federal Election Commission to establish a principal campaign committee called Kanye 2020. However, the rapper “filed the paperwork on the same day a former consultant who had been hired to get the rapper on the ballot in multiple states told New York Magazine’s Intelligencer that West was ‘out’ of the presidential race.”

But by Thursday, Billboard reported, “West appeared to take the second important step to officially launch a White House run with the filing of an FEC Form 2 (Statement of Candidacy), which is filed once an individual has raised or spent more [than] $5,000 in campaign activity, triggering candidacy status under federal campaign finance law; that form, too, listed a Cody, Wyoming, address.”
