New Yorkers are angry about migrant crisis, and they're blaming Democrats, poll shows

A new poll found a majority of New York residents think the migrant crisis is a serious problem, and they blame Democrat politicians for dropping the ball on immigration.

The Siena College poll found that 82% of New Yorkers called the migrant crisis serious while 52% said it was "very serious."

The poll found that New Yorkers were overwhelmingly negative on Democrats over the crisis.

New York Gov. Kathy Hochul, a Democrat, garnered approval on the migrant crisis from only 35% of New Yorkers, while 51% said they disapproved of her job performance.

New York City Mayor Eric Adams, also a Democrat, had a net disapproval rating of 16% as well, with 47% saying they disapproved of his handling of the migrant crisis while only a meager 31% said they approved of his job performance.

The Biden administration fared worst of all on the migrant crisis. Only 34% said they approved of the administration's response, while 59% said they disapproved of the Biden response.

"Democrats, Republicans, Independents, upstaters, downstate, city, suburban, they all agree that this influx is a problem," said Siena College Pollster Steven Greenberg.

Adams and Hochul have engaged in a very public rhetorical feud over how to provide shelter for the tens of thousands of migrants being sent to New York City. Adams has demanded that other cities step up to take in more migrants, while Hochul has argued that the city is best situated to absorb the influx of immigrants.

"Scattering people all over the state does not allow us to manage the most important element of defusing this situation for the long term, which is to start the process to allow them to work," Hochul has said.

Residents have responded by protesting against migrant centers, and some demonstrations have turned violent.

One county, Erie County, has refused to take in any more migrants after two asylum seekers were arrested for sexual assault accusations in two separate alleged incidents.

New York governor rips into NYC mayor over his mishandling of migrant crisis

Democrat New York Gov. Kathy Hochul ripped into the Democrat mayor of New York City over his demands to ease the number of migrants being shipped to his city from border states.

Hochul's attorney slammed Mayor Eric Adams in a letter that accused him of failing to appropriately address the crisis.

Adams has asked that the burden of housing migrants be taken on by other cities in the state, but Hochul has argued that NYC is best situated to deal with the crisis.

"Let's be very clear — you cannot involuntarily take people from the city and send them all over the state of New York," said Hochul in a phone interview with Spectrum News NY1. "Putting someone in a hotel on a dark, lonely road in upstate New York and telling them they're supposed to survive is not compassion."

Adams is facing an uprising from his own constituents who are angry about crime at migrant housing centers in the city. He has responded by demanding the Biden administration declare a national emergency at the border so that other states can bear the burden of housing migrants.

The letter from Hochul's attorney responded by criticizing Adams.

The letter claimed that Adams was slow to act and failed to use some of the millions of dollars that were already allocated to help relocate migrants. The letter also blamed Adams for migrants being forced to sleep on the street outside of the Roosevelt Hotel when beds were available elsewhere.

"It is true that they did not accept some of the help we offered," Hochul said.

Adams has claimed that the migrants would cost New York City as much as $12 billion over the next three years if nothing is done by the state and the federal government.

The governor might also be responding to Erie County officials refusing to accept any more migrants after asylum seekers were accused in two separate incidents of sexual assault at hotels where migrants were being housed.

Hochul and Adams agree on at least one issue — they both want the federal government to allow migrants to find legal employment.

“The number one priority for those here is to be able to get a job,” Hochul said. “We want them to get employment, but there’s constraint at the federal level as far as their designation.”

She has also sent the National Guard to Erie County in order to help with security around migrant housing centers to prevent further alleged incidents of sexual assault.

Mayor Adams claims 50% of NYC hotel rooms are being occupied by migrants and it's already hurting the economy

New York City Mayor Eric Adams claimed that the migrant crisis is so bad that 50% of all hotel rooms in the city are being occupied by illegal aliens.

Adams made the comments on Wednesday while addressing criticism for his handling of the crisis.

“In order to address an onslaught, you have to have places you can put people. Almost half of all hotel rooms now are taken up by asylum seekers. Think about that. I’m not sure what it’s going to take before people hear what I am saying," said Adams in a media briefing in Harlem.

“New York City is the hotel capital. We’re the hotel capital — tourism, visitors, sporting events, graduations,” he added. “It’s a major economic engine for us. Almost 50% of those hotel rooms are being taken up by migrant asylum seekers.”

The Democrat has been lambasted on all sides for his handling of the issue, but others of his own party lined up to accuse him of exaggerating the problem.

“It would be impossible,” said City Councilwoman Diana Ayala. “The math doesn’t add up.”

Officials estimate about 65,000 migrants have arrived in New York City in recent months, but many of those have been placed in public school gyms, emergency relief shelters, and some homeless shelters.

Adams went on to to demand that the federal government do more to help his administration deal with the crisis at the border.

“Instead of moneys coming from people who are visiting us and spending and our tourism and our Broadway plays — instead of them using those hotels, we’re using those hotels,” Adams said.

Various hotel officials dodged queries from the New York Daily News to confirm the claim made by Adams.

He has also faced criticism from the left for reports that his administration was seeking to place some of the migrants on Rikers Island.

Officials are expecting a surge at the border after Title 42, a Trump-era immigration policy, has ended and forced the government to allow asylum seekers to stay in the U.S. while awaiting processing.

NYC mayor promises migrants at Texas shelter that he's going to fight for them to 'experience the American dream'

New York City Mayor Eric Adams, a Democrat, called for federal help to ease the migrant crisis even as he promised some asylum seekers that he would help them experience the "American dream."

Adams attended a conference in Washington, D.C., on Wednesday, where he outlined a plan for dealing with the migrant crisis but called for more help from the federal government.

"Today I'm calling for a national response to the asylum-seeker crisis," Adams said.

He described his experience of attending a convention of mayors in Texas where he met migrants at a shelter.

"What I saw was not a state or city problem, it's a national problem," he added.

Adams said he made a promise to the migrants he saw at the shelter.

"We're going to fight so that you can experience the American dream," he said to the group outside a church in El Paso.

Adams has been criticized and heavily ridiculed by those pointing out that he has defended New York City's status as an immigration "sanctuary city" even as he complained when the mayors of other cities sent their migrants to the Big Apple.

More recently, he demanded that another Democrat, the governor of Colorado, stop sending migrants to New York City.

"One time we had to deal with Republican governors sending migrants to New York. Now we’re dealing with Democratic governors sending migrants to New York," he said at the time.

Ironically, part of Adams' plan to address the migrant problem is for asylum seekers to be distributed across the country in a "decompression strategy."

He's also called for $2 billion from the federal government to help cities like his deal with migrants.

"This is wrong. This is wrong," Adams said. "And for the federal government, and that is on both sides of the aisle, to not acknowledge that we are destabilizing our cities. I'm not going to remain silent on that. This is wrong for the cities of America to take this on."
