Hawaii woman sent alarming messages before going missing in LA; her father just took his own life amid desperate search

A Hawaii woman went missing two weeks ago after she sent alarming text messages to her family. Amid a desperate search for her, the woman's father took his own life.

Hannah Kobayashi was traveling from Maui to New York City on a Nov. 8 flight to visit family. The 31-year-old's flight landed at Los Angeles International Airport at 9:53 p.m. local time, according to Newsweek. Surveillance video from LAX shows Kobayashi wearing a black hooded sweatshirt and tie-dye leggings.

'Deep hackers wiped my identity, stole all of my funds, & have had me on a mind f*** since Friday.'

However, Kobayashi never boarded her connecting flight, which was scheduled to leave after a 42-minute layover.

Instead, Kobayashi decided to go to The Grove — a high-end shopping mall — for a LeBron James event and posted a photo from the event on her Instagram page.

Kobayashi’s aunt, Larie Pidgeon, said her niece started sending her alarming text messages days later.

Pidgeon told USA Today, "On [Nov. 11], we started getting texts saying that she didn't feel safe, that someone was trying to steal her funds, that someone was trying to take her identity. Weird things, calling us babe, things that weren't quite the normal way that she speaks."

Kobayashi wrote in a text message, “Deep hackers wiped my identity, stole all of my funds, & have had me on a mind f*** since Friday.”

Pidgeon told KTLA-TV, “She mentioned feeling scared, and that someone might be trying to steal her money and identity. Strange, cryptic messages — things about the matrix, it was so unlike her. And then all of a sudden, no more communication.”

“This is so unlike Hannah, she’s very responsible. I mean, she was looking forward to the event so much. She had a hotel room booked that was a couple thousand dollars, the tickets for the event was a couple of hundred dollars,” Pidgeon told KITV-TV.

Pidgeon said Kobayashi's phone suddenly stopped receiving phone calls Nov. 11.

"[Kobayashi's phone] was pinging in the LAX airport, and it no longer ... it goes straight to voicemail," Pidgeon said. "It didn't move from LAX airport, so that is where we know that she last was."

After radio silence, Pidgeon traveled from New York to try to find her niece.

When asked whether she had a message for Kobayashi, Pidgeon said, "We will not stop until we find you, you have so many family, you have so many friends who love you so, so, so much... If you're feeling scared, or if you feel alone, you are not. We are with you."

Kobayashi's family reported her missing Nov. 11 and notified Los Angeles police, the FBI, and LAX authorities.

Surveillance video recorded Kobayashi leaving the Pico Metro Station, near LAX, with an unidentified person at 10.03 p.m. Nov. 11.

Kobayashi's family said of the video, "It is evident that Hannah does not appear to be in good condition. and she is not alone."

Ryan Kobayashi — the 58-year-old father of Hannah Kobayashi — traveled to Los Angeles to search for her. Ryan Kobayashi was seen in the streets of the city with missing posters of his daughter.

The father told KTLA Nov. 18, “I miss her. Just want her to know that, and just want her to reach out — anything.”

Kobayashi told CNN last week, “Hannah loved to travel. She loved photography, art, music. I wasn’t too close with her … growing up. We hadn’t had contact for a while. I'm just trying to make up. I’m trying to get her back. That’s my main focus.”

Tragically, Ryan Kobayashi was found dead Sunday near LAX.

Citing the Los Angeles Police Department, KNBC-TV reported that Kobayashi committed suicide by jumping off a parking structure near LAX around 4 a.m. Sunday.

RAD Movement — a non-profit organization that provides families with support when loved ones disappear — released a statement about Ryan Kobayashi's death.

"The Kobayashi family endured a devastating tragedy today. After tirelessly searching throughout Los Angeles for 13 days, Hannah’s father, Ryan Kobayashi, tragically took his own life," the RAD Movement stated. "This loss has compounded the family's suffering immeasurably."

The organization added, "What the family needs most in this difficult time is for all communities to rally around them with support, compassion, and prayers. Please be considerate with your comments and posts. The trauma they are enduring is profound, and they now face the additional burden of grieving the loss of their family's pillar and navigating next steps."

The non-profit stressed, “Hannah IS still actively missing and is believed to be in imminent danger. It is crucial for everyone to remain vigilant in their efforts to locate Hannah.”

According to the California General Attorney's Office, Hannah Kobayashi is 5' 10" tall and approximately 140 pounds. She has brown hair and brown eyes and is fair-skinned with freckles. She also has a tattoo of a knife on her forearm.

Mom of missing Georgia woman, 20, finds out on Mother's Day her daughter's skeletal remains located in Tennessee woods

A distraught mother is begging the public to come forward with any information regarding her daughter's death after the 20-year-old Georgia woman went missing. The grief-stricken mom was informed her young daughter was dead on Mother's Day.

Maury-Ange Faith Martinez, of Alpharetta, was last seen leaving Gwinnett County Jail around 2:20 p.m. on Aug. 28, 2023, according to WSB-TV. A further investigation by police determined that her last known location was in unincorporated Cobb County, according to Cobb County Police Sgt. Eric Smith.

The Martinez family reported the woman missing on Aug. 28, 2023. At the time, police issued an alert for the public to be on the lookout for the missing woman.

On Jan. 5, 2024, human skeletal remains were discovered in rural Chattanooga, Tennessee. The location is approximately 100 miles from where Martinez was last spotted.

Last month, the Hamilton County Medical Examiner in Tennessee confirmed the remains to be those of Maury-Ange Faith Martinez, according to a statement by the Cobb County Police Department.

Anita Darling, Maury-Ange's mother, was notified on Mother's Day that her daughter's skeletal remains were discovered in a wooded area of Tennessee after gone missing for more than 250 days.

'Step up and say something.'

Darling is desperately pleading with the public to come forward with any details that will help bring some bit of closure to her daughter's tragic death.

"I want to know what happened to my daughter. It doesn't cure the loss by any means, but it fills a hole that my brain doesn't haven't to make up what happened for the rest of our lives," Darling told WAGA-TV.

The heartbroken mom said, "Someone has to know something. She was a noticeable girl. She was a gorgeous girl with an energetic, magnetic personality. If anybody has information, step up and say something."

Sgt. Smith explained, "There are more resources, but it requires a lot of coordination among each other to make sure they're sharing information and things of that nature to hopefully find out what happened."

Anyone with information on the disappearance and death of Martinez is urged to contact the Cobb County Police Department at (770) 499-3945. Anonymous tips can be submitted through Crime Stoppers Greater Atlanta at (404) 577-TIPS (8477).

Darling said of her daughter, "She was very loving, funny, quirky, sing at the top of her lungs doesn't care if anybody's listening type of person. Just a fantastically loving human being, and that's the thing I can be most proud of."

The mother added, "Funny little things that we see, or we notice that remind us of Maury."

Police find body of missing 20-year-old woman in creek; suspect kills himself during traffic stop by cops

A 20-year-old Texas woman went missing just before Thanksgiving, and sadly, her body was found in a creek on Tuesday. Police had zeroed in on a possible suspect, but the 45-year-old man killed himself when law enforcement officers attempted to interview him.

Amanda Stevenson vanished, and her family reported her missing on Nov. 21. She had last been seen two days earlier.

Family members and police searched for the missing 20-year-old woman, but she was nowhere to be found.

During the investigation, police started focusing on a potential suspect – 45-year-old Kevin Bennetsen. Police said the married man with children was a rideshare driver and a "known associate" of Stevenson. Bennetsen was reportedly a substitute teacher in the Victoria school district as recently as 2022.

Police reportedly interviewed Bennetsen at his home.

In an attempt to interview him a second time a day after Stevenson was reported missing, officers purportedly pulled over Bennetsen while he was driving. However, the suspect pulled out a gun and shot himself to death during the traffic stop, according to the Victoria Police Department.

Detectives began searching areas that Bennetsen was known to frequent.

"Over twenty members of the department have searched a piece of property near the city of Yoakum with scent-sensitive dogs and drones several times with both consent from the cooperating spouse of the now-deceased associate and an additional search via a search warrant," the Victoria Police Department said in the statement.

The police added, "The public should avoid speculating what may have happened, creating a false narrative."

Bennetsen’s death is being investigated by Texas Rangers.

Around 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday, the Victoria County Sheriff’s Office received a report about human remains discovered in a creek near a bridge by Patriot Park in Victoria, the Victoria Advocate reported. Victoria County Sheriff Justin Marr later confirmed that it was Stevenson's dead body in the creek. Stevenson was located roughly 16 miles from where she was last seen. Police also found her cell phone, but it was locked.

Police did not reveal a cause of death.

An autopsy will be conducted by the Travis County Medical Examiner’s Office.

Stevenson was 19 years old when she was reported missing and turned 20 on Nov. 24.

Police urge anyone with information about Stevenson's death to contact Victoria Crime Stoppers at 361-572-4200.

A little hero: Toddler finds elderly woman with Alzheimer's who'd been missing for 4 days

A little hero: Toddler finds elderly woman with Alzheimer's who'd been missing for 4 days

An elderly woman in early stages of Alzheimer's is home and resting with her family now thanks to the careful eye of a local toddler.

On August 9, the Coweta County Sheriff's Office issued a silver alert for Nina Lipscomb, an 82-year-old resident of Senoia, Georgia, about an hour south of Atlanta. Lipscomb had last been seen around 2 a.m. earlier that morning.

Though police and concerned neighbors conducted a thorough search of the local area, no one could find Lipscomb.

That is, until 1-year-old Ethan Moore went chasing bubbles in his backyard.

According to a Facebook post from his mom, Brittany Moore, little Ethan and his dogs were playing in the backyard like usual last Friday when the wind picked up and carried their bubbles toward a wooded area behind their fence.

"This time, Ethan didn't just chase the bubbles," Moore wrote, "but he stopped and looked into the woods. He bent down a little holding onto the fence and said 'feet.'"

When Brittany asked Ethan to repeat what he'd said, he once again uttered the word "feet" and gestured toward the woods.

"I proceeded to bend down to get on his level to see what he was pointing at," the post continues, "and I saw feet."

Like many others in the community, Brittany Moore and her family had heard about Lipscomb's disappearance and had prayed that authorities would find her soon. When Moore saw the pair of feet that Ethan had spotted in the woods, she knew that Ms. Nina had finally been found.

Moore said she then panicked with worry about Lipscomb's condition.

"I sobbed and all I could think was, she is right here, please be alive," Moore recalled in the post.

It turns out, Moore needn't have worried. Shortly after paramedics and police arrived, someone announced, "She is alive and talking!"

Medical teams then transported Lipscomb to the hospital where she remained under observation until Monday.

The sheriff's office has since updated its BOLO post about Ms. Nina to confirm she had been located.

According to CBS46 Atlanta, the Moores refused the reward money offered by the Lipscomb family. Ms. Nina was discovered less than a quarter of a mile from where she disappeared.

"Thank you God for protecting her," Moore wrote on Facebook. "Thank you God for the breeze to move the bubbles. Thank you God for being with us in that moment. Thank you for giving this family and community peace. Thank you for all of the first responders, 911 agent, my husband, parents, and inlaws."

Passerby hears screaming from storm drain, discovers naked woman who’d been missing for several weeks. The story only gets weirder from there.

A good Samaritan encountered a woman stuck in a storm drain Tuesday, and discovered she'd been missing for three weeks.

What are the details?

According to a Wednesday Newsweek report, the unnamed passerby heard screaming from a Delray Beach, Florida, storm drain.

When the passerby went to investigate the source of the sound, they discovered a naked woman trapped in the storm drain and immediately called authorities.

The Delray Beach Fire Rescue quickly arrived on the scene, where they had to remove a grate and utilize a ladder and harness to lift the woman out of the drain. The storm drain entrance, authorities noted, was also too small for an adult to fit through.

How did this even happen?

According to the Miami Herald, the woman, who is 43 years old, went swimming in a canal near her boyfriend's home on March 3.

"While she was swimming, she came across a doorway near a shallow part of the canal. She stated she entered the doorway and noticed a tunnel," an incident report read according to the outlet.

The report noted that the woman became curious when she saw the doorway, and began walking down the tunnel. That tunnel led to the next "and so on until she became lost," the Herald noted.

"The woman claims she was walking in the tunnels, lost, for about three weeks until she 'saw some light' and decided to sit there because she saw people walking by," the Herald added.

Her boyfriend reported her missing after 9 p.m. on March 3 to the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office, the outlet said.

No foul play suspected

The unnamed woman was transported to a nearby hospital for non-life-threatening injuries, including dehydration.

"She was lucky," Delray Beach Fire Rescue spokesperson Dani Moschella told Newsweek. "I don't know how much longer she would have been OK down there. The idea that somebody might be down there for any length of time is disturbing. It's dirty, dangerous, there are snakes, rats, garbage, dirt and leaves, anything that's on the street that washes into a sewer, and it smells terrible."

The woman, Moschella said, was too weak to stand on her own without assistance.

Delray Beach Police spokesperson Ted White said that investigators do not suspect any type of foul play.

"From the police department standpoint, we don't believe there was any type of crime committed," White explained. "It doesn't feel like she was taken against her will. It appears this was done by her own free will."

History of mental illness and drug use

The woman's identity had not been released at the time of this reporting, but her mother said that she suffers from an undisclosed mental illness and has a history of past drug use.

"The 43-year-old woman will now undergo a mental assessment," the outlet reported. "Her mother told police she has a history of mental illness and is known for 'doing odd things and making bad decisions when she is high on drugs,' according to the report. Police said the 43-year-old is a Methadone patient and that her last dose was the day prior to her disappearance."
