'It's only goodbye for now, I'll be back': George Santos drops congressional bid

Former Republican Rep. George Santos, who was expelled from Congress last year while representing New York's 3rd Congressional District, has announced that he is dropping his bid to represent New York's 1st Congressional District.

"I have decided to withdraw from my independent run for #NY1," Santos tweeted on Tuesday. "I don't want my run to be portrayed as reprisal against Nick Lalota… Although Nick and I don’t have the same voting record and I remain critical of his abysmal record, I don’t want to split the ticket and be responsible for handing the house to Dems," he continued.

"I have meet with leaders and with constituents and I have made the decision to hang it up here and stop perusing this race, THIS YEAR!" he wrote. "The future holds countless possibilities and I am ready willing and able to step up to the plate and go fight for my country at anytime," he noted. "It’s only goodbye for now, I'll be back."

Last month, Santos announced that he would challenge GOP Rep. Nick LaLota, the congressman who represents New York's 1st Congressional District.

"I want to announce that I will be returning to the arena of politics and challenging Nick for the battle over #NY1. I look forward to debating him on the issues and on his weak record as a Republican. The fight for our majority is imperative for the survival of the country," Santos tweeted in March.

Then, later in March, he announced that he would run for office as an independent.

"I in good conscience cannot affiliate myself with a party that stands for nothing and falls for everything. I am officially suspending my petitioning in #NY01 to access the ballot as a Republican and will be filling to run as an independent," Santos had tweeted.

Months after being expelled from the House, George Santos announces congressional bid

Former Republican Rep. George Santos of New York, who was expelled from office last year, has announced a congressional bid.

"New York hasn't had a real conservative represent them since I left office arbitrarily, thanks to RINO, empty suits like @nicklalota. He is a willing to risk the future of our majority and the future of this country for his own political gain," Santos tweeted on Thursday night.

"Tonight, I want to announce that I will be returning to the arena of politics and challenging Nick for the battle over #NY1. I look forward to debating him on the issues and on his weak record as a Republican. The fight for our majority is imperative for the survival of the country," he wrote.

Santos served as the representative for New York's Third Congressional District during most of last year, but in December was expelled from the House in a 311-114 vote

In February, Democrat Tom Suozzi won the seat during a special election.

"To raise the standard in Congress, and to hold a pathological liar who stole an election accountable, I led the charge to expel George Santos. If finishing the job requires beating him in a primary, count me in," Nick LaLota tweeted.

Santos attended President Joe Biden's State of the Union address on Thursday night.

Earlier this year, the former congressman expressed interest in serving as director of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement if former President Donald Trump becomes president again.

"My new year resolution is that President Trump returns to the white house and in 2025 I can be appointed Director of ICE," Santos said in a tweet. "ICE has had their hands tied for far too long with the sole exception of the great four years of DJT. The time is now and that's why I'm putting my name in the mix for a role that will take grit and a fearless person and not a coward that will fear media spin."

Biden supporters flood streets over reported Biden victory — but media called Trump rallies 'super spreader' events

Americans — including Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) — flooded city streets nationwide Saturday afternoon after the media declared former Vice President Joe Biden the president-elect.

The massive crowds celebrated Biden's reported victory. Ironically, their gatherings come just one week after the media scolded President Donald Trump for allowing massive gatherings of supporters at his campaign rallies by circulating a study that claimed Trump's rallies resulted in hundreds of coronavirus deaths.

What are the details?

Immediately after news broke of Biden's projected victory, social media videos showed Biden's supporters pour into the streets to celebrate — all while in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic.

Social justice activist Shaun King said of the situation in Brooklyn, "I'm telling you, right now in Brooklyn it looks, feels, and sounds like we just overthrew a dictator."

Schumer even joined the celebrations in New York City — and was caught without a mask, at least temporarily.

The situation in Washington, D.C., outside the White House was much of the same. Thousands gathered to mock Trump's impending election loss.

What did the media say about Trump rallies?

The media spent much of the latter part of the election criticizing Trump for holding massive campaign rallies, and were quick to circulate a study that pinned culpability for COVID cases on Trump.

From Politico:

President Donald Trump's campaign rallies between June and September may have caused some 30,000 coronavirus infections and more than 700 deaths, according to a new study by Stanford University economists.

The working paper, released late Friday, examined the impact of 18 rallies held between June 20 and Sept. 30 by comparing spread of the virus after each event to parts of the country that didn't host rallies. The findings illustrate the risks of not heeding public health warnings to wear masks and avoid large gatherings to mitigate the risks of Covid-19, the authors — including B. Douglas Bernheim, the chair of Stanford's economics department — wrote.

Meanwhile, Vox declared, "The president is most likely a super spreader."

Saturday's massive celebrations came despite America experiencing its worst day of COVID-19 cases to date.

On Friday, the U.S. set a single day record of more than 126,000 new positive COVID-19 cases.
